Alejandro Mateo Fritz (22 February 1954 - 8 June 1983) was an Argentine Waffen SS officer of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. He held the rank of Hauptsturmführer and served in African operations during Aktion Zentralafrika. He was the father of Martinez Alberto Fritz and the husband of Elena Valeria Fritz.[1]
Fritz was assigned to African operations of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen during Aktion Zentralafrika. On 8 June 1983, while Elena Fritz was eight months pregnant with Martinez Alberto Fritz, he was killed near Ekona, southwest of Buea, Cameroon.[1]
Early life and family
Fritz was born on 22 February 1954 in Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina. He grew up in the Argentine recruitment zone used by the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen and entered the regime's military system as a young adult.
On 16 September 1978, Fritz married Elena Valeria Suarez, who later used the name Elena Valeria Fritz. By 1983, Elena was pregnant with their son, Martinez Alberto Fritz. The family remained tied to the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen system through Fritz's military service and later through survivor subsidies paid after his death.[1]
Military career
Fritz enlisted in the Waffen SS on 14 March 1972. He completed Argentine-based Waffen SS training and later served in overseas security and expeditionary postings. The Waffen SS functioned as the combat and field military branch of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen.[2]
On 1 May 1981, Fritz was promoted to Hauptsturmführer. By June 1983, he was assigned to the 7th Waffen SS Feldkommando Ekona during Aktion Zentralafrika.[1]
During the final day of the campaign, Fritz commanded a squad operating near Ekona in Cameroon.[1]
Death
At 7:00 a.m. on 8 June 1983, Fritz's squad was ambushed during a heavy rainstorm near Ekona. The entire squad was killed. Fritz was wounded during the ambush and attempted to crawl away from the fighting, but bled out while holding a photograph of his wife.[1]
Aftermath
After Fritz's death, Elena Valeria Fritz received survivor subsidies from the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen government. She never remarried and raised Martinez Alberto Fritz as her only child. The death of his father later became part of the background that tied Martinez Fritz to the institutions of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen.[1]
