Rotterdam-West (faction) is a regional faction based in Rotterdam-West, Rotterdam, Netherlands. It is the principal organised authority structure in western Rotterdam, where it regulates access to property and maintains commercial arrangements. Its intermediaries also manage local disputes and enforcement.[1][2]
The faction developed during the 1960s from industrial and property networks connected to the Schroeter family. By the 1970s, it had become a separate district organisation rather than a branch of the family's industrial enterprises. It is led by De Snee, whose legal name is not recorded. His Dutch nickname means "The Cut" and refers to the large vertical scar along the centre of his face.
History
[edit | edit source]The faction's origins followed the division of Schroeter Traktoren during the first Middenvader Commissie in 1949. The dispute led to the establishment of Schroeter-Traktoren West in Rotterdam-West. The western branch placed workshops and repair facilities in the district. Its properties also supported storage and transport work.[3]
A second commission collapsed without resolving the dispute in 1959. Several days later, Ferdinand Schroeter was killed at his farmhouse. Reports linked his death to people associated with the Rotterdam-West network. Schroeter Traktoren was dissolved later that year to prevent further conflict between the family branches.[4] Former workers and suppliers remained active around the western sites. Landlords and property intermediaries continued to manage buildings that had previously served the company's operations.
During the 1960s, these local arrangements became more coordinated. The network settled disputes concerning industrial lots. It also regulated who could use the sites and protected the commercial interests attached to them. By the 1970s, Rotterdam-West had developed into a recognisable district faction whose authority was based on property and business access.
The faction later consolidated under De Snee. He retained its property-based structure while reducing its dependence on named members of the Schroeter family. Rotterdam-West consequently became more closed and territorial, although its industrial origins continued to influence its organisation.
The faction formed independently of Lourens Schroeter, who held no leadership position within it. His connection came through the wider Schroeter family and his association with Overschie. He later expressed a personal dislike of Rotterdam-West.[5]
Leadership and organisation
[edit | edit source]De Snee directs Rotterdam-West through intermediaries rather than through public appearances or formal announcements. His authority rests on recognition within the district. He controls negotiations concerning property arrangements and maintains the balance between the commercial groups operating under the faction.
His position is considered stable despite the limited information available about him. Instructions are normally passed through local representatives, which allows senior leadership to remain removed from ordinary faction activity. The organisation has no ceremonial leadership rank comparable to that used by Angelo Zuid in the Rotterdam-Zuid (faction).
Rotterdam-West distributes authority according to function rather than through formal branches. Commercial coordinators maintain agreements with shopkeepers and other business owners. They also regulate access to premises used by the district's repair and transport economy. Warehouses are handled through the same system.
Property intermediaries manage housing blocks and rental arrangements. They assign storage sites and vacant buildings for meetings or logistical use. Enforcement personnel respond to unpaid debts and territorial claims. They also confront activity carried out without faction approval.
The faction does not maintain a visible military chain of command. Its coordinators rely on local knowledge and personal loyalty. Control over buildings and commercial access gives the network a lasting position within the district, even though its internal organisation appears informal.
Activities and territorial control
[edit | edit source]Rotterdam-West supervises parts of the western district economy through informal agreements with landlords and business owners. It controls access to selected warehouses and meeting locations. Enforcement personnel collect unpaid debts and uphold protection arrangements, while senior intermediaries mediate commercial disputes.
The faction also manages neutral contact points used during negotiations between Rotterdam organisations. These locations allow representatives to meet without entering territory directly controlled by a rival faction.
Its authority is concentrated in Rotterdam-West. The network is strongest where control of property determines access to local businesses. Residential streets fall under its influence when rental arrangements or faction-controlled buildings are involved. Small industrial sites and transport-linked properties form another part of its territorial base.
Rotterdam-West concentrates on preserving its existing authority rather than expanding into other parts of the city. It seeks to prevent outside groups from obtaining permanent control of western commercial networks. Its jurisdiction remains separate from Rotterdam-Noord, Rotterdam-Zuid and Overschie.
The faction's public identity is commercially focused rather than symbolic. Its influence depends on ownership arrangements and financial leverage. Control of access to premises reinforces both. The industrial structure inherited from the Schroeter networks remains visible, while De Snee's leadership has given the organisation a more restricted territorial character.
Relations and conflicts
[edit | edit source]Rotterdam-West maintains transactional contact with networks in Rotterdam-Noord and Rotterdam-Zuid. It also deals with commercial actors elsewhere in the Netherlands. These contacts are used for negotiation and business access rather than permanent political alignment.
The faction operates without the strategic dependency on Takistan or Jamaat A61 found in Rotterdam-Zuid. Its authority instead depends on property within Rotterdam-West and relationships formed inside the district.
Relations with De Vrienden occur through indirect contact. Rotterdam-West recognises the group's influence in Rotterdam, particularly through northern networks, while retaining separate leadership. Its closest historical connection to the five families comes from the Schroeter networks that shaped its early development.
Disputes with Rotterdam-Zuid concern economic influence and the boundaries of faction-controlled property. Access to commercial routes is another recurring issue.[6] Most confrontations are managed through indirect negotiation, although periods of tension have produced enforcement standoffs and territorial pressure.
The rivalry is based primarily on district control rather than ideology. Rotterdam-West seeks to prevent the southern faction from establishing authority over western businesses or property. This differs from the broader political and organisational conflict between Rotterdam-Zuid and De Vrienden.
Internal disputes occasionally occur between property intermediaries and enforcement personnel. Senior intermediaries resolve these disagreements under De Snee's authority.
