Caterina Ferraro Nostrini (21 March 1721 – 12 January 1786) was an Italian household administrator who kept the domestic accounts at Casa Nostrini in Cosenza. She was the wife of the founding Nostrini capofamiglia, Lorenzo Nostrini.[1][2]
Early life
[edit | edit source]Caterina Ferraro was born on 21 March 1721 in Cosenza, in Calabria Citra, then part of the Kingdom of Naples. Her father, Pietro Ferraro, worked as a notarial copyist. Her mother was Lucia Gallo.
Ferraro began parish instruction at the church of San Giorgio on 4 October 1728. She learned to read parish entries and perform the arithmetic used in household accounts. In 1737, her father began training her to copy expense records.
Marriage and household work
[edit | edit source]Caterina married Lorenzo Nostrini on 3 May 1743 at the church of San Giorgio. Their son Domenico Nostrini was born at Casa Nostrini on 16 February 1744. Their daughter Teresa Nostrini was born there on 17 March 1747. Their son Antonio Nostrini was born at the same house on 29 January 1751.[2]
After her marriage, Nostrini maintained the domestic account book at Casa Nostrini. She recorded household purchases and payments to staff. The book remained separate from the sealed estate archive controlled by Lorenzo. She continued this work after he established the formal Nostrini household line in 1761. On 1 December 1785, she transferred the daily account book to Domenico.
Caterina and Lorenzo were the common great-grandparents of Matteo Norte and Camilla Norte. Matteo descended through Antonio, while Camilla descended through Domenico.[3]
Death
[edit | edit source]Caterina Nostrini died at Casa Nostrini on 12 January 1786. She was 64 years old.[2]
