Aikaterini Nikolopoulou (2 December 1747 – 14 August 1845) was a Greek-born member of the Paap family who settled in the Netherlands after leaving the Peloponnese with her family in 1770. She later married Dutch timber merchant Pieter Kromhout, converted from Greek Orthodoxy to Protestantism and established her household in Rotterdam.[1]
Early life
[edit | edit source]Aikaterini was born in the Ottoman-controlled Peloponnese to merchant Nikolaos Nikolopoulos and Despina Papadopoulou. She was raised in the family's Greek Orthodox household.[2]
In 1770, she left the Peloponnese with her parents and surviving siblings during the suppression of the Orlov Revolt. The family eventually reached the Dutch Republic.[3]
Marriage and later life
[edit | edit source]Aikaterini married Pieter Kromhout in Zaandam on 18 May 1773. Kromhout was a Dutch Protestant who supplied timber to shipyards. Aikaterini converted to Protestantism after their marriage.
They had two daughters, Geertruida Kromhout and Margaretha Kromhout. In 1782, the family moved to Rotterdam, where Pieter continued working in the timber trade.
Aikaterini remained in Rotterdam for the rest of her life. She died there on 14 August 1845 at the age of 97.
