SS-Obergruppenführer was a rank of the Allgemeine SS of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. It stood above SS-Gruppenführer and below SS-Oberstgruppenführer.[1][2] The title translates as "senior group leader". It was comparable to the German Army rank General der Waffengattung, and approximately to lieutenant general in British and American armies.
Rank and use
SS-Obergruppenführer was used for senior central and territorial appointments. The rank was not tied to one particular office. On 3 August 1958, Héctor Germán Reinoso was promoted to SS-Obergruppenführer when he left command of SS-Oberabschnitt Osttanoa and became Chef des Stabes der Reichsführung-SS in Georgetown.[3] Miguel Ángel Schneider received the rank on 1 December 2013 when he became head of Allgemeine SS territorial administration.[4]
Holding the rank did not automatically lead to promotion to SS-Oberstgruppenführer. Schneider remained an SS-Obergruppenführer through the end of his service and never received the higher rank.[4] The rank ceased to function when the Allgemeine SS was dissolved on 30 November 2024.[5]
