Narevaku is an archipelagic country in the South Pacific near Fiji. Tanoa is an island province in its Northern Division. La Roche in the Central Division served as the national capital until the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen conquered the country in 1944. The regime later governed Narevaku from Georgetown until its central command surrendered on 30 November 2024.
Geography and administration
[edit | edit source]The Narevaku Islands include both volcanic and coral islands. Narevaku is divided into Northern, Central, Eastern and Southern divisions. Tanoa belongs to the Northern Division, where Georgetown serves as the divisional capital. La Roche lies in the Central Division. The Eastern and Southern divisions extend across the other island groups.
History
[edit | edit source]Narevaku developed from indigenous island societies. Related Oceanic languages were spoken across the archipelago, and local political traditions predated colonial rule. The name Narevaku is a coined indigenous endonym rather than a translation from a real language.
France colonized the archipelago during the 19th century. La Roche became the colonial capital, and French was used in government and education. French settlement names remained in use alongside indigenous names. Dutch merchants and shipping companies also operated in the islands. Settlers associated with that trade account for Dutch place names, although the Netherlands never ruled Narevaku.
France later granted Narevaku limited self-government. A Narevakan administration worked from La Roche before the Second World War. Japan occupied the entire country during the war but kept that administration in place under military authority.
Jan Paap arrived in Tanoa in August 1944 and initially cooperated with the Japanese occupation forces against the United States Marines. Glöbberist intermediaries later arranged a secret armistice. Japan ended its formal occupation, and American forces stopped direct operations against Paap without recognizing his regime.
Paap's forces captured La Roche and removed the Narevakan administration. They brought the country's other divisions under their control before the end of 1944. Georgetown was founded in 1945 and replaced La Roche as the regime's capital. The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen continued to govern Narevaku until 30 November 2024.
