Tanoa

From the Vrienden Universe, a fictional wiki

Tanoa is a geographically anomalous island located in the southern Pacific region, exhibiting characteristics associated with both South America and Oceania. The island is known for its dense tropical ecosystems, volcanic geology, and long history of isolation, foreign control, and conflict.

Following decades of militarization and instability, Tanoa entered a period of consolidation after 2025. As of the present period, the island is considered politically and territorially stable, with no large-scale armed conflict ongoing.

Geography

[edit | edit source]

Tanoa is a large island characterized by dense rainforests, mountainous volcanic terrain, inland wetlands, and fragmented coastal settlements. The interior remains sparsely populated due to difficult terrain and protected ecological zones.

Earlier descriptions of Tanoa as a “floating island” are now understood to have originated from navigational anomalies, tectonic instability, and deliberate misinformation rather than literal flotation.

The island experiences a tropical climate with heavy rainfall, high humidity, and frequent fog in elevated regions.

Geological history

[edit | edit source]

Tanoa is of volcanic origin. The central volcanic structure, Mont Tanoa, dominates the island’s geography and cultural identity.

The last confirmed eruption of Mont Tanoa occurred in 1966. Since then, the volcano has been classified as dormant. Minor geothermal activity remains present, but no renewed volcanic threat has been recorded.

Early sightings and habitation

[edit | edit source]

The earliest recorded sighting of Tanoa dates to 866 AD, when it was reportedly observed during long-range maritime travel. These early accounts were later considered unreliable but are now treated as proto-navigational encounters.

In 1662, a sailor documented the sighting of a solitary human figure on the shoreline, described as wearing red garments. No contact was established.

By 1884, pirates operating in the region recorded encounters with indigenous inhabitants while burying goods on what is now known as Ravi-ta. These reports constitute the first detailed descriptions of native Tanoan societies.

Modern history

[edit | edit source]

Period of external control (1944–2024)

[edit | edit source]

From 1944 until 2024, Tanoa was under the effective control of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. During this period, the island was heavily militarized, isolated from international oversight, and used for security, intelligence, and experimental activities.

Large portions of the indigenous population were displaced or eliminated, and access to the island was tightly restricted.

Collapse and stabilization (2024–present)

[edit | edit source]

The authority of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen collapsed between late 2024 and mid 2025. Following a brief phase of fragmentation and localized conflict, no successor paramilitary structure succeeded in asserting island-wide dominance.

By the late 2020s, Tanoa transitioned into a stable condition marked by the absence of organized warfare, the reopening of controlled maritime access, and the normalization of internal administration.

Settlements and notable locations

[edit | edit source]
  • Georgetown is the largest urban settlement on Tanoa. Formerly the administrative center during paramilitary rule, it now functions as the island’s primary civil and logistical hub. Much of its infrastructure has been repurposed or restored.
  • Ravi-ta is a smaller island located in the northern bays of Tanoa. The settlement of Ipota was originally a native village.

During the 20th century, the native population was exterminated. The island later served as a private and restricted site for elite actors. Today, Ravi-ta remains sparsely inhabited and tightly regulated. Mont Tanoa is the dormant volcanic massif at the island’s center. The surrounding highlands are environmentally protected and largely uninhabited. The Southern Jungles are a vast rainforest region once used for clandestine movement and resistance activity. They are now subject to conservation and limited access.

Conflicts

[edit | edit source]

Fish Conflict

[edit | edit source]

The Fish Conflict was an asymmetric conflict that began in 2019 and intensified during the collapse of centralized authority in 2024–2025. It formally concluded with the elimination of major armed structures and did not continue into the stabilization period.

Current status

[edit | edit source]

Tanoa is currently stable. No active large-scale conflicts are recorded, and the island is no longer governed by a paramilitary authority.
