Angelo Hendrik Hoos (born 4 April 1955) is a Dutch criminal and debt collector who worked for Toetanchamon and later Themis. He directed debt collections carried out with his older brother, Martin Hoos, and escaped before police arrived after the brothers robbed a bank in Rijswijk in 2003.[1][2]

Early life

[edit | edit source]

Hoos was born on 4 April 1955 in The Hague to Hendrik Hoos and Louise Wilhelmina Perzborn. He was the youngest of their six children. His father, a former German soldier and metalworker, had settled in the Netherlands after the Second World War. After leaving regular work for Toetanchamon in 1958, Hendrik continued teaching his children metalwork and vehicle repair.[3]

Criminal career

[edit | edit source]

When Martin Hoos decided to join Toetanchamon at age 23, their father recruited Angelo alongside him and assigned both brothers to debt collection. Angelo spoke to debtors and decided how the collections would proceed. Martin provided physical intimidation and sometimes assaulted or killed people who continued refusing to pay. Angelo allowed Martin to use lethal violence, while their father paid little attention to how the brothers collected debts.[1]

During the 1980s, Angelo and Martin became bodyguards for their older brother Eef Hoos, who had taken over the operational leadership of Toetanchamon. Angelo continued collecting debts with Martin after Eef founded Themis in 1997.[1][4]

At 10:42 on 18 September 2003, Angelo and Martin robbed a small bank in Rijswijk. Bank employees activated a silent alarm, but Angelo escaped before police arrived. Martin was caught outside the bank at 10:51 after tripping over a bicycle rack during their getaway. Angelo later resumed working with Martin after his brother was released from prison on 18 September 2007.[2]

Hoos also used his welding skills to damage property. In one recorded incident, he welded the entrance door of a fast-food establishment shut after employees refused to give him a drink containing extra sugar. The act was recorded as property damage and prompted further inspection of Hoos industrial practices.[5]

Personal life

[edit | edit source]

Martin depends heavily on Angelo in everyday life. Angelo directs his decisions and restrains him when necessary. In Angelo's absence, Martin sometimes destroys objects around him until he becomes exhausted or is given sugar. Angelo usually gives him the sugar to calm him down.[6]

The brothers moved together to Vriendendam in 2016, where a Themis office had relocated around 2014. They already knew people living in the city through De Vrienden. Lower living costs for members of the Hoos family and access to Vriendendam Racetrack also influenced their decision to move. Both brothers continued collecting debts for Themis.[7]
