Giuseppe Nostrini (18 November 1797 – 18 November 1897) was an Italian estate manager and brothel operator from the Nostrini family, the early form of the Noord family. He was the eldest child of Raffaele Nostrini and Caterina Greco and inherited the Ionian branch papers from his father on 19 September 1849.[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit | edit source]Giuseppe Nostrini was born on 18 November 1797 in Rossano, in Calabria Citra, then part of the Kingdom of Naples. He belonged to the Ionian branch of the Nostrini family, which remained in Calabria after the Convocazione Settentrionale della Famiglia Nostrini.
Nostrini began private instruction in Rossano on 7 October 1804. On 13 May 1811, after the family settlement at Aversa, his father placed him under the branch copyist Antonio Greco for training in lease copying, rent balances, and household correspondence. He completed this training on 30 August 1815.
Career
[edit | edit source]Nostrini entered the Ionian branch office on 4 January 1816. His early work concerned tenancy accounts, olive-grove rents, and copied property papers retained by the Rossano branch after the 1811 settlement.
The Nostrini family settlement of 1811 preserved the Calabrian and Ionian branches while allowing the main archive and senior authority to move north. After the convocation, Raffaele Nostrini returned to Rossano and kept the Ionian branch under the Nostrini surname.[3] Between 1812 and 1819, the moving branches began using the surname Norte in northern records, while the older Nostrini name remained tied to the family's Calabrian origin.[4]
On 19 September 1849, Raffaele Nostrini transferred the Ionian branch lease papers to Giuseppe. Giuseppe then became capo del ramo ionico and managed the Rossano papers, local estate income, and branch correspondence.
In 1853, Nostrini began spending longer periods in Naples. On 11 February 1854, he opened the first of several private adult clubs near the port district. By 1862, he controlled four clubs in Naples through leased rooms and front managers. The clubs were known for obscene stage performances, heavy drinking, paid sexual services, and unsanitary private rooms. Nostrini used income from the clubs to support the Ionian branch office while keeping the businesses separate from the family lease papers.
After the Kingdom of Italy was established, Nostrini continued operating in Naples. He kept the Rossano branch papers under the Nostrini name and used local managers for the adult clubs. By the 1880s, his Naples income had become larger than the branch income from Rossano leases.
Personal life
[edit | edit source]Nostrini married Beatrice Marino at Rossano Cathedral on 22 April 1823. Their son, Carmine Nostrini, was born on 3 February 1825 and later handled correspondence between Rossano and Naples. Their daughter, Caterina Nostrini, was born on 19 July 1831 and married Naples tavern owner Domenico Romano on 8 October 1851.
Beatrice Marino left the Rossano household on 16 May 1858 after refusing to live with Nostrini in Naples. The couple remained legally married but kept separate households. Nostrini lived mainly in Naples after 1860 and returned to Rossano for branch papers, lease renewals, and family meetings.
Family measurements recorded his height as 1.79 m.
Death
[edit | edit source]On 18 November 1897, Nostrini suffered a heart attack during a striptease performance at one of his Naples clubs after heavy alcohol consumption. He died in Naples later that day. He was 100 years old.
