Panagiotis Nikolopoulos (3 November 1758 – 1770) was a Greek member of the Nikolopoulos household, the family from which the Paap family later developed. He died at the age of 11 after being shot during the family's escape from the Peloponnese in 1770.
Early life
[edit | edit source]Panagiotis was born in the Ottoman-controlled Peloponnese to merchant Nikolaos Nikolopoulos and Despina Papadopoulou. He was raised in the family's Greek Orthodox household and was one of their eight children.[1]
In 1770, the household left the Peloponnese during the suppression of the Orlov Revolt. Panagiotis travelled with his parents and siblings during the escape.[2]
Death
[edit | edit source]During the flight, Sophia Nikolopoulou became separated from the family and was overtaken by Ottoman soldiers. Panagiotis attempted to go back for her and was shot in the head.
He remained alive after the shooting, and the family attempted to move him while continuing the escape. His condition deteriorated before they could carry him farther. Martinos Nikolopoulos remained with Panagiotis as he died. Panagiotis was 11 years old.
The surviving members of the household continued the journey and eventually reached the Dutch Republic.[2]
