Teresa Nostrini (17 March 1747 – 9 May 1858) was an Italian silk weaver and workshop manager in Cosenza. She was a daughter of Lorenzo Nostrini and Caterina Ferraro Nostrini. From 1771 to 1805, she managed a silk workshop at Casa Nostrini.

Early life

Teresa Nostrini was born at Casa Nostrini on 17 March 1747. Cosenza was then part of Calabria Citra in the Kingdom of Naples. Her older brother was Domenico Nostrini. Her younger brother was Antonio Nostrini.

Caterina taught Teresa to read account entries and perform commercial arithmetic. On 2 May 1760, Teresa began training at a silk-reeling workshop in Mendicino. She learned to prepare reeled silk thread for use on a loom.

Silk work

Teresa returned to Cosenza on 14 August 1765 and began paid work as a silk weaver. She prepared narrow lengths of cloth on a handloom for a Cosenza cloth seller.

On 7 April 1771, Lorenzo gave Teresa the use of an outbuilding at Casa Nostrini. She installed two handlooms and managed the space as a silk workshop. Reeled silk arrived through a supplier in Mendicino. Teresa sold the finished cloth to merchants in Cosenza.

Six women worked under Teresa's supervision by 1778. She selected the weaving patterns and inspected each finished length of cloth. Teresa maintained a workshop payment book that was separate from Caterina's domestic accounts and Lorenzo's sealed estate archive.

Later life and death

After Lorenzo died in 1792, Domenico confirmed Teresa's continued use of the workshop. She stopped working at the loom in 1802 but remained its manager. On 30 June 1805, she closed the workshop and sold the two looms to former workers.

Teresa remained at Casa Nostrini after the workshop closed. She died there on 9 May 1858 at the age of 111.
