The 1967 Băicoi weapons depot attack was a Bucharest Butchers raid on a Brașov Bandits weapons depot outside Băicoi on 17 March 1967. Constantin Vlădescu led the four-man group, which seized firearms and burned the depot. Eleven Bandits died during the attack and the pursuit that followed. The operation led Oskar Dirlewanger to establish Secția Roșie under Vlădescu's command.[1][2]
Background
[edit | edit source]After the 1966 CEC Palace massacre, Dirlewanger accepted Vlădescu into active Bucharest Butchers work and let him select rival targets with limited supervision.[3] Vlădescu chose a Brașov Bandits weapons depot outside Băicoi for his first authorized attack. Erich Mußfeldt went with him to evaluate his conduct for Hermann Florstedt.[1]
The depot occupied a disused oil-equipment warehouse approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) north of Ploiești. The attackers travelled in a dark-green M461 driven by 20-year-old Sorin Ionuț, with its rear bench seats removed to make room for cargo.[1]
Attack
[edit | edit source]Twelve Brașov Bandits guarded the warehouse when the group arrived before dawn on Friday, 17 March. At 5:15 a.m., Vlădescu attacked through the vehicle gate with Sandu Ionuț and Mußfeldt, while Sorin stayed with the M461. A bullet grazed the right side of Vlădescu's scalp without penetrating his skull. Ten guards were killed during the fighting.[1]

The attackers took six vz. 61 Škorpion submachine guns as proof of the raid. They also seized two HK G3 rifles and an RPK light machine gun. Mußfeldt set the warehouse on fire, and the flames reached the remaining ammunition after the group had withdrawn.[1]
Pursuit
[edit | edit source]The two surviving guards pursued the M461 in a GAZ M21 Volga. At the Băicoi–DN1 junction, Mußfeldt shot its driver, Tamás Kovács. The Volga left the road and crashed, killing Kovács. The passenger, László Farkas, escaped and warned the Brașov Bandits, identifying Vlădescu as the commander. His warning began the conflict between the two organizations. After returning to Bucharest, Vlădescu bound his scalp wound himself and refused medical assistance.[1]
Aftermath
[edit | edit source]Dirlewanger established Secția Roșie ("Red Section") after the raid and placed Vlădescu in permanent command, with Sandu as his deputy. Sorin continued driving for the unit, while Mußfeldt returned to Florstedt after completing his evaluation.[1][2]
