Ploiești is a city in Prahova County, Romania. It lies north of Bucharest and is one of the main urban centres on the route between the Romanian capital, the Prahova Valley, and central Romania.

The city is associated with oil refining, rail transport, road freight, and industrial activity. Its position on the DN1 corridor gives it direct transport links with Bucharest and the northern approaches to the capital region.[1]

Geography

[edit | edit source]

Ploiești is located in southern Romania, near the transition between the Romanian Plain and the hill country leading toward the Carpathians. The city functions as the administrative centre of Prahova County and as a transport point between Bucharest, the Prahova Valley, and central Romania.

The surrounding area contains industrial sites, suburban settlements, agricultural land, and road and rail connections serving Bucharest and northern Romania.

History

[edit | edit source]

Ploiești developed as a market and administrative settlement in Wallachia. Its growth accelerated after oil extraction and refining became important in Prahova County during the modern period.

During the twentieth century, the city became one of Romania's best-known industrial centres. Oil processing, railway activity, machinery, and regional administration shaped its urban development.

In the post-1989 period, Ploiești remained tied to industry, logistics, commuting, and service activity connected to Bucharest and Prahova County.

Economy and transport

[edit | edit source]

Ploiești's economy is based on refining, manufacturing, logistics, retail, education, and county-level services. Its industrial identity is closely tied to the oil sector, while later development added commercial and transport functions.

Road routes connect Ploiești with Bucharest through the DN1 corridor. Nearby settlements in Ilfov County, including Balotești, are part of the wider route linking Bucharest with Ploiești and central Romania.[1]

Rail connections support passenger and freight movement toward Bucharest, Brașov, Moldavia, and other Romanian regions.

Criminal investigations

[edit | edit source]

Ploiești appeared in several later investigations connected to the Bucharest Butchers and Snubable Enterprise. These records concerned transport, property files, individual residents, and isolated incidents rather than formal municipal administration.

In 1950, Oskar Dirlewanger used part of the proceeds from the Calea Rahovei robbery to buy two trucks through contacts in Ploiești. On 12 March 1961, he ordered Butchers transport protection extended from Bucharest into Ploiești, giving the organization access to industrial storage outside the capital.[2]

Mihai Dobreanu was born in Ploiești on 12 February 1987. He later became Director of External Operations at Snubable Enterprise and handled outside property cover for the organization.[3]

Dorin Vasile Bălănescu was born in Ploiești on 22 August 1972. He began work at a notarial office there in 1990 before moving into property administration connected to Snubable Enterprise. After Snubable collapsed, he transported archive boxes to a rented storage unit near Ploiești South railway station on 2 May 2025 and was arrested there on 4 May 2025.[4][5]

In 2020, Valeriu Petrescu carried out the Păunescu-Voinea murders in Ploiești. In a separate 2022 incident, Valentin Cârjan, a visitor from Ploiești, died during the Peckerwitz brake failure at Ramworld Amusement Park in Bucharest.[6][7]
