Melchior Paap was the first known Great Paap and the first formal guardian of the Book of Paap. He was born on 7 November 1777 as the eldest child of Martinos Nikolopoulos and Eleni Anagnostopoulou.
Melchior was born in the Dutch Republic as part of the first Dutch-born Paap generation. He inherited custody of the Book of Paap from his father. As Great Paap, he protected the book and passed its teachings to later Paaps.
The title followed primogeniture through Melchior's direct line. Under this rule, the eldest child of a Great Paap inherited the office and custody of the book.
