The Rheintor Medical Institute (German: Medizinisches Institut Rheintor) was a private clinic in Basel, Switzerland, controlled by Glöbbery. It publicly offered internal medicine and clinical pharmacology while serving as a site for secret adrenochrome experiments on captives under Dr. Arnold Isaak Burgelstein.[1]

Medical operations

[edit | edit source]

Burgelstein transferred his laboratory work to Rheintor in 1988 and began the Rheintor Catecholamine Trials that year. The experiments were conducted on captive adults and children. Institute staff carried out the procedures under his direction, with Burgelstein examining the captives and approving each trial. He reviewed the laboratory results and recorded injuries and deaths.[2][1]

Surviving records named 312 victims, of whom 117 died during the trials or from their effects. The remaining 195 survived, many with permanent injuries. Investigators estimated that between 350 and 400 people had been subjected to the trials because some records were missing or had been destroyed. In 2006, Burgelstein completed the Rheintor Protocols (German: Rheintor-Protokolle), restricted medical reports recording the results of the experiments.[1]

Staffing

[edit | edit source]

Aurel Guggenheim joined Rheintor as a Laboratory Physiologist when Burgelstein transferred his work there in 1988. He became Deputy Laboratory Chief in 1989 and directed staff during experimental sessions. His work concerned physiological monitoring and sample processing, while Burgelstein retained overall authority. Guggenheim also participated in blood-extraction experiments on captive children and recorded cardiovascular changes during the procedures. When he moved to Israel in 1992, he left the deputy position but remained on a restricted internal payroll as an external scientific adviser. He reviewed Rheintor data from Israel and returned to Basel several times a year for selected experiments and changes to the institute's protocols.[2]

In July 1989, Stefan Shrankenhaus arranged for his son, Albert Shrankenhaus, to work at Rheintor. Burgelstein considered Albert incompetent and restricted his duties to drawing blood from child victims during extraction and deliberately frightening them. Burgelstein tolerated this abuse throughout Albert's employment. Albert remained at the institute until 2008.[3]
