Russia, officially the Russian Federation, is a country in Eastern Europe and northern Asia. It extends from the Baltic and Black Sea regions across Siberia to the Pacific Ocean. Its capital and largest city is Moscow.

Russia borders numerous European and Asian states, including Ukraine to the west and southwest. It also has coastlines on the Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, and Caspian Sea.[1][2]

Geography

[edit | edit source]

Russia is the largest country in the world by land area. Its territory includes the East European Plain, the Ural Mountains, Siberia, the North Caucasus, the Russian Far East, and Arctic regions.

The Ural Mountains are commonly used as a geographic division between European Russia and Asian Russia. Major rivers include the Volga, Don, Ob, Yenisei, Lena, and Amur.

Russia's Black Sea coast lies near the Caucasus and forms part of the wider maritime region connecting Eastern Europe, Anatolia, the Caucasus, and the Mediterranean route through the Turkish Straits.[2]

History

[edit | edit source]

The medieval polity of Kievan Rus' developed around Kyiv and other East Slavic centres. Later political authority shifted through several principalities, including Moscow, which became the centre of the expanding Russian state.

The Tsardom of Russia was proclaimed in 1547. The Russian Empire was established in 1721 and expanded across Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Siberia, and Central Asia.

During the nineteenth century, the Russian Empire was a major European power. Russian forces intervened in several regional conflicts, including the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 alongside Austrian forces.[3]

The Russian Empire collapsed during the First World War and the revolutions of 1917. The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic became the largest republic of the Soviet Union, which was founded in 1922.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Russian Federation became an independent state. Moscow remained the national capital and the centre of federal political authority.

Government and economy

[edit | edit source]

Russia is a federal semi-presidential republic. The president serves as head of state, while the government is led by the prime minister. Legislative power is held by the Federal Assembly, consisting of the Federation Council and the State Duma.

The country is divided into federal subjects, including republics, oblasts, krais, federal cities, autonomous districts, and an autonomous oblast.

Russia's economy includes energy production, mining, manufacturing, agriculture, transport, defence industries, finance, and services. Oil, natural gas, metals, timber, grain, and military production are major parts of the national economy.

Railways, pipelines, ports, inland waterways, and road corridors connect European Russia with Siberia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Pacific.

Society and culture

[edit | edit source]

Russian is the official language and the main language of government, education, and public life. Many minority languages are also spoken across the federation.

Russian culture developed through Orthodox Christianity, imperial institutions, Soviet political and social structures, regional traditions, literature, music, theatre, cinema, science, and military history.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are the country's largest cultural and political centres. Other important cities include Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Chelyabinsk, Samara, Rostov-on-Don, and Vladivostok.
