Ioana Stănescu (born 12 February 1967) is a Romanian criminal who concealed evidence and money belonging to contract killer Mircea Ionuț. She was Mircea's unmarried partner from 1983 until his execution in 2025 and is the mother of Vladut Ionuț.[1]
Ioana was arrested after recovered messages showed that she had hidden weapons and cash for Mircea during the collapse of the Bucharest Butchers. She was required to testify during his Bucharest Tribunal proceeding. The tribunal assigned her life imprisonment on 4 November 2025.[2][3]
Personal life
Ioana was born on 12 February 1967. She began a relationship with Mircea on 2 March 1983, when she was sixteen and he was 25. Mircea sexually abused her from the beginning of the relationship. Ioana gave birth to Vladut on 1 January 1984 while she was still sixteen.
The assaults continued after Ioana reached adulthood and occurred most frequently before she turned 23. She remained emotionally attached to Mircea but confronted him when she discovered his affairs. Mircea withheld household money and prevented her from leaving their home. He threatened her and sometimes hit her during these confrontations.
Mircea had brief affairs throughout the relationship. In 1990, he began a long-term affair with Nicoleta Drăgan, whose husband he had killed during a liquor-shop robbery in Ploiești. Mircea spent increasing numbers of nights at Nicoleta's home. His assaults against Ioana became less frequent, although Ioana and Mircea remained partners until his execution on 28 October 2025.
Arrest and imprisonment
During her adulthood, Ioana knowingly kept Mircea's weapons and murder payments in their home. She knew that he killed people for the Bucharest Butchers and concealed information about those killings. In 2008, she learned that Mircea had supplied Marku Ionuț with money used to establish Porno Bucharest.[4]
Between 2 and 4 May 2025, Mircea sent Ioana messages instructing her to hide weapons and cash before authorities reached their home. Ioana replied that she had completed the instructions, after which they deleted the exchange. When Mircea was arrested on 13 May, investigators questioned Ioana as a witness. She denied knowing that the weapons or money were kept in the home and was released while her statement was examined.
Examiners recovered the deleted messages on 15 May. Ioana was arrested the next day. She was required to testify on 21 October about the weapons and money she had concealed. Her evidence was entered into Mircea's tribunal proceeding before it assigned him death on 24 October.[2]
Ioana's own tribunal proceeding recorded that she had hidden evidence and retained money from Mircea's killings. It also found that she had obstructed investigations for decades. Her testimony did not reduce the outcome. On 4 November 2025, the Bucharest Tribunal assigned her life imprisonment.
