The Battle of Petit Nicolet was an evacuation operation fought in Petit Nicolet, Tanoa, on 10 September 2023 during the conflict between the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen, the Tanoan resistance, and the Fish Collective. The operation was organized to move families away from the island.
The evacuation succeeded despite an ambush by the Allgemeine SS. Mark Hugerinus Paap and John Hugerinus Paap provided cover fire while civilians boarded a boat. After Einsatz forces failed to capture Mark, Eef Paap ordered the execution of surviving soldiers and officers involved in the operation.
Background
[edit | edit source]Under Tanoa Einsatzgruppen rule, resistance groups moved civilians out of exposed villages and away from forced labor, security sweeps, and reprisals. Petit Nicolet was chosen because its position allowed clandestine movement away from heavier Einsatzgruppen oversight.
The Tanoan resistance planned to escort native civilians still living in the village. The Fish Collective assisted the route and the boat movement away from shore.
Battle
[edit | edit source]At around 22:35, as civilians were escorted toward the boat, the Allgemeine SS ambushed the group. The 1st Allgemeine SS Division "Siege Chiche" was sent to stop the evacuation.
Mark and John Hugerinus Paap used sniper rifles to cover the civilians moving toward the boat. Resistance members fought from the other side of the street while the evacuation continued. The civilians boarded during the firefight.
During the fighting, an Allgemeine SS soldier attacked John from behind with a knife. Mark intervened and killed the soldier, preventing John's death. After the civilians had boarded, John entered the boat and navigated away through fog while Mark and the remaining resistance members continued fighting.
Outcome
[edit | edit source]The battle resulted in a successful civilian evacuation. The resistance lost 12 fighters, while the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen lost 20 soldiers and failed to stop the boat.
After being woken with news of the battle, Eef Paap ordered that Mark be delivered alive to him that night. Einsatz forces failed to carry out the order. The surviving soldiers and officers from the failed capture attempt were later executed on Eef Paap's private island.
Aftermath
[edit | edit source]The Battle of Petit Nicolet showed the growing ability of resistance groups to coordinate local escorts, maritime escape routes, and armed cover against Einsatz security forces.
Petit Nicolet appeared again during Mark Hugerinus Paap's final operation. On 23 November 2024, Mark reached the village with a small group of resistance members before separating from them and departing alone by boat. That later movement was separate from the 2023 battle.
