The Tanoa Einsatz Expansionist Campaign was a campaign of territorial expansion undertaken by the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen under Jan Paap during the 1970s. The campaign extended Tanoan control beyond its existing territories through military intervention and the establishment of puppet governments. In 1974, the regime took control of Liberia and established Großliberia as its first formal African puppet state. The following year, Tanoan forces annexed Fiji and placed it under direct military rule.[1]
The campaign also extended Tanoan political influence into Rwanda during the late 1970s, although the country's full takeover occurred in 1991. The territorial arrangements established in Liberia and Fiji remained in place until the collapse of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen in November 2024.[2][3][4]
Background
[edit | edit source]The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen had governed Narevaku since its conquest in 1944. After establishing its government in Georgetown, the regime began extending its control outside the South Pacific. Patagonia came under Tanoan authority in 1953, followed by the formal annexation of Argentina in 1965. The annexation brought the Argentine military establishment under Tanoan command and gave Jan Paap control over the country's state institutions.[5]
During the early 1970s, Paap began pursuing further territorial expansion. His government sought control over states that could provide access to overseas ports and natural resources. In Africa, Tanoan officials used financial pressure and cooperation with sympathetic political figures to establish influence without immediately occupying a country. Fiji was subsequently taken over through military intervention and incorporated directly into the Tanoan state.[1][6]
Expansion
[edit | edit source]Liberia
[edit | edit source]Liberia became the first state brought under Tanoan control during the campaign. The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen had developed contacts with Liberian political figures before 1974, using commercial intermediaries and security agreements to gain influence over government officials. The country's Atlantic ports were of particular interest to the Tanoan government, which also sought access to Liberia's rubber industry and mineral resources.[6]
In 1974, pro-Tanoan officials took control of the Liberian government with support from the Einsatzgruppen. The takeover preserved the existing Liberian state institutions but placed major government decisions under Tanoan supervision. On 15 October 1974, the new administration adopted the name Großliberia, meaning Greater Liberia. Amos D. Karpeh became State President and signed the Monrovia Security and Development Accord, granting Tanoan advisers authority over defence planning and border security. The agreement also placed port protection and financial stabilization under their supervision.[7]
Karpeh's government suspended opposition political parties and restricted public assemblies. The Liberian security services were reorganized, while senior government appointments required Tanoan approval. A new appointed legislature, the Nationalrat Großliberias, replaced the previous legislative system. The presidency continued to issue domestic decrees, but Jan Paap retained final authority over the puppet government through his officials in Monrovia.[7][8]
The arrangement gave the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen control over Liberia without annexing it. Liberian government offices continued administering the country, while Tanoan advisers supervised its political decisions and economic agreements. Monrovia became the principal base for Tanoan interests in West Africa.[9]
Fiji
[edit | edit source]In 1975, the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen carried out a political and military intervention in Fiji. The intervention removed the independent Fijian government, which had governed the country since independence from the United Kingdom in 1970. Tanoan-aligned forces secured the country's principal ports and airfields before bringing its civilian administration under military control.[10]
Fiji was formally annexed and incorporated into the Tanoan administrative system. The occupation authorities took control of the country's communications infrastructure and integrated its airspace into Tanoan military monitoring. Fiji's maritime routes were also brought under Tanoan supervision. Security installations were established in major urban areas, and the occupation government restricted political activity under its security legislation.[10]
Unlike Großliberia, Fiji was governed directly by the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. The regime maintained an occupation administration that answered to the central government in Georgetown. The country's ports and airfields were used by Tanoan forces, while its existing economic activities continued under the occupation authorities.[10]
Rwanda
[edit | edit source]Tanoan influence also reached Rwanda during the late 1970s. In 1979, the regime began extending its indirect-control policy into the country through military contacts and financial pressure. The full takeover of Rwanda occurred in 1991, when Tanoan representatives took advantage of the weakening Rwandan government during the opening phase of the Rwandan Civil War. Rwanda was subsequently placed under SS-Großabschnitt Afrika, while retaining its republican institutions under Tanoan supervision.[1][2]
Consequences
[edit | edit source]The annexation of Fiji encountered armed opposition. On 31 December 1979, a disturbance at Korovou Prison in Suva developed into an uprising against Tanoan rule. Prisoners protesting their treatment were joined by anti-Tanoan detainees, while resistance supporters outside the prison began attacking the occupation authorities. Tanoan-controlled Fijian police attempted to contain the revolt before fighting spread through parts of Suva.[11]
Communications failures delayed the response from the Tanoan central command. Once communications were restored, occupation forces concentrated in Suva and suppressed the uprising on 2 January 1980. The fighting left 327 people dead. Following the crisis, the Fiji Ordnungspolizei command received a permanent direct communications line to Georgetown for emergencies.[11][12]
The administrations established during the campaign remained under Tanoan control after Jan Paap retired in 1980 and Eef Paap became Führer. Liberia continued operating through its puppet government, while Fiji remained under direct occupation. On 30 November 2024, the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen collapsed and its overseas command authorities ceased functioning. Fiji established a transitional government following the withdrawal of Tanoan forces. In Liberia, the puppet government ended and the name Großliberia was abandoned as an official state designation.[3][4]
