Petit Nicolet
Petit Nicolet is a village on Tanoa, in the Northern Division of Narevaku.[1][2]
History
[edit | edit source]During the conquest of 1944, Jan Paap's forces initially bypassed Petit Nicolet and returned after resistance developed there.[3] Inhabitants who resisted were shot or enslaved.[4] The village's capture and consolidation of the Northern Division marked the end of the campaign recognized by the Northern Tanoa Campaign Medal.[5]
On 10 September 2023, the Battle of Petit Nicolet took place during an operation to evacuate native families by boat. The Fish Collective and Tanoan resistance supported the evacuation. The boat escaped despite an SS ambush, with twelve resistance fighters and twenty Tanoa Einsatzgruppen soldiers killed.[1]
On 23 November 2024, Mark Hugerinus Paap reached Petit Nicolet with a small group of resistance members during his final operation. He separated from them there and departed alone by boat.[6]
