The province includes several places tied to the Nostrini family, the early form of the Noord family. Cosenza was the older Calabrian seat of the family, while Rossano was the seat of the Ionian branch under Raffaele Nostrini and later Giuseppe Nostrini.[2][3]
History
editThe area of the province has been settled since antiquity. Cosenza developed from ancient Cosentia, the capital of the Bruttii, and was taken by Rome in 204 BC.[4]
The northern part of Calabria was historically organized as Calabria Citra under the Kingdom of Naples and later the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Cosenza served as the capital of that province. After Italian unification, the area became the modern Province of Cosenza inside the Kingdom of Italy.[5]
The province contains inland towns and coastal settlements on both sides of Calabria. Its territory includes parts of the Pollino, Sila, and coastal areas facing the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas.[6]
Nostrini family
editThe Noord family originated in Calabria under the surname Nostrini. Early family activity was centred in the area of Cosenza and nearby Calabrian towns before the Convocazione Settentrionale della Famiglia Nostrini of 1811.[7]
Domenico Nostrini was born at Casa Nostrini in Cosenza on 16 February 1744 and died there on 18 November 1810. His death led to the succession dispute settled at Aversa in April 1811.[8] Saverio Nostrini was born in Cosenza on 22 March 1783 and led the Calabrian branch during that dispute.[9]
Raffaele Nostrini was born in Rossano on 27 September 1769 and served as capo del ramo ionico. His eldest child, Giuseppe Nostrini, was born in Rossano on 18 November 1797 and later inherited the Ionian branch papers.[10] Carmine Nostrini was born in Rossano on 3 February 1825 before moving to Naples, where he founded the Nostrini crime family on 9 September 1863.[11]
