Nikolaos Nikolopoulos

Nikolaos Nikolopoulos (19 November 1717 – 7 November 1822) was a Greek merchant from the Peloponnese and an early ancestor of the Paap family. He traded olive oil and wine under Ottoman rule before leaving the Peloponnese with his household around 1770 and settling in the Dutch Republic.

Life in the Peloponnese

Nikolaos lived in the Ottoman-controlled Peloponnese and worked as a merchant. His trade concentrated on olive oil and wine. He married Despina Papadopoulou, who came from a church-associated Greek Orthodox household. Nikolaos was also Greek Orthodox.

Nikolaos and Despina had eight children. Their eldest child was Martinos Nikolopoulos. Their other children were Aikaterini Nikolopoulou, Georgios Nikolopoulos, Eleni Nikolopoulou, Dimitrios Nikolopoulos, Sophia Nikolopoulou, Panagiotis Nikolopoulos and Anastasia Nikolopoulou.

The family remained in the Peloponnese until the period surrounding the Orlov Revolt. Dimitrios was killed in 1768, while three of the younger children later died during the family's escape.

Migration to the Dutch Republic

Around 1770, Nikolaos and Despina fled the Peloponnese with Martinos, Aikaterini, Georgios and Eleni during the suppression of the Orlov Revolt. The surviving household eventually reached the Dutch Republic.

Despina died from a heart attack shortly after their arrival, on 3 February 1771. Nikolaos remained in the Netherlands with the surviving members of the family.

Later life and death

Nikolaos lived through the period in which his descendants began using Paap as a hereditary surname. The name had developed after Martinos recorded "Paap" in the Book of Paap and the same word later became associated with the family in Dutch usage.

Nikolaos died from natural causes on 7 November 1822 at the age of 104.
