Antonius Martin Paap (12 November 1832 – 2 November 1940) was a Dutch architect who served as the second Great Paap from 27 August 1877 until his death. He studied architecture in Düsseldorf and spent most of his adult life in Kleve. From 1856 to 1859, he served in the Prussian Army before returning to architectural work. In 1887, he built the Martinoskerk in the Hoge Veluwe.

Early life and education

[edit | edit source]

Antonius was born on 12 November 1832 as the eldest son of Melchior Paap, the first Great Paap. Around 1851, he moved to Kleve in the Kingdom of Prussia and studied architecture in Düsseldorf.

During his studies, he met Amalie Schroeter in 1853. Amalie was receiving private instruction in architectural drawing and design in the same academic environment. Antonius completed his studies before they married on 12 December 1855.

Military service

[edit | edit source]

In 1856, Paap entered the Prussian Army as a foreign volunteer and retained his Dutch nationality. He spent three years in the infantry during peacetime and reached the rank of Unteroffizier. After leaving active service in 1859, he returned to Kleve and resumed architectural work.

Architecture and Great Paap

[edit | edit source]

Melchior Paap died on 27 August 1877. Antonius became the second Great Paap that day under the family's primogeniture succession and took custody of the Book of Paap. Custody of the book passed through Melchior's direct line as part of the Great Paap title.[1] Antonius preserved the book but did not expect the prophecy written by Martinos Nikolopoulos to occur literally.

In 1887, Paap built the Martinoskerk.[2] The church stood in the Hoge Veluwe on Paap family land that later became part of Vriendendam, and its name commemorated Martinos Nikolopoulos. It later became commonly known as the Paapkerk.

Personal life and death

[edit | edit source]

Antonius and Amalie's son, Martinus Antonius Johannes Paap, was born in Kleve on 8 November 1877. Antonius continued living there until his death on 2 November 1940 at the age of 107. Martinus succeeded him as Great Paap on the same day.[3]
