Despina Papadopoulou (8 December 1722 – 3 February 1771) was a Greek woman from the Peloponnese and an early ancestor of the Paap family. She was raised in a Greek Orthodox household with close involvement in local church life. Despina married merchant Nikolaos Nikolopoulos and left the Peloponnese with her family during the suppression of the Orlov Revolt in 1770.[1]
Life in the Peloponnese
[edit | edit source]Despina was born in the Ottoman-controlled Peloponnese on 8 December 1722. She was raised as a Greek Orthodox Christian and remained part of the church life of her community.[1]
She married Nikolaos Nikolopoulos, an olive oil and wine merchant. They had eight children. Their eldest child was Martinos Nikolopoulos.[2]
The family remained in the Peloponnese until the unrest surrounding the Orlov Revolt. Four of Despina and Nikolaos's children died before or during the family's departure from the region.[1]
Migration and death
[edit | edit source]In 1770, Despina and Nikolaos fled the Peloponnese with their four surviving children. The household eventually reached the Dutch Republic.[3]
Despina survived the journey but died from a heart attack on 3 February 1771, shortly after the family's arrival. She was 48 years old.[3]
