Dumitru Rambam (14 May 1888 – 9 September 1957) was a Romanian Jewish man from Slatina, Romania and a member of the Rambam family. He was the son of Constantin Rambam and the father of Nicolae Rambam. Before the Second World War, he worked in brewery production. After surviving the war in hiding, he founded the Center of Jews in Bucharest.
Early life and work
Dumitru Rambam was born in Slatina, Romania, on 14 May 1888. Before the Second World War, he worked in brewery production. During the war, Rambam hid in an attic for most of the war because he was Jewish.
Center of Jews
After the war, Rambam founded the Center of Jews in Bucharest. The center was known in Romanian as Centrul Evreilor. Its Hebrew name was Merkaz HaYehudim (מרכז היהודים). Jewish survivors met there after the war. Rambam used the title Nasi (נשיא) inside the center. In Romanian, the title was rendered as președinte.
Rambam used donations to obtain the first meeting premises for the Center of Jews. He did not return to regular work after the war and lived from donations. He continued to live in Slatina while the center operated in Bucharest, and he used donation money given to the center to buy himself a new car.
Family
Rambam was the son of Constantin Rambam. He had one known son, Nicolae Rambam.
Death
Rambam died in Bucharest, Romania, on 9 September 1957. After his death, donations were collected to transfer his body from Romania to Israel. He was buried in Jerusalem.
