Overschie is a northwestern district of Rotterdam, South Holland, Netherlands. It was a separate village and municipality before it became part of Rotterdam in 1941. The area kept its own local identity after the annexation and remained distinct from the inner districts of Rotterdam.
Overschie is part of the background of the Schroeter family. Lourens Schroeter was born there in 1940 and later became the fifth member of De Vrienden. Martinus Schroeter was also born in Overschie and worked there as a marble craftsman.
Geography
[edit | edit source]Overschie lies in the northwestern part of Rotterdam. The older centre developed along the Schie, with the Overschiese Dorpsstraat as its main local street. The district has an older village core and later urban development around it.
History
[edit | edit source]Overschie developed as a village before it became part of Rotterdam. It remained a separate municipality until 1941, when it was annexed by Rotterdam during the city’s wartime expansion.
After the annexation, Overschie became part of Rotterdam’s northwestern urban area. Its older village structure remained visible in the district, while later housing and nearby industrial development brought it further into the city.
Schroeter family
[edit | edit source]The Schroeter family has its main Overschie link through Lourens Schroeter and Martinus Schroeter.
Lourens Schroeter was born in Overschie on 14 January 1940. His early life in the district forms the Overschie background of the Schroeter family before his later role in De Vrienden.
Martinus Schroeter was born in Overschie on 17 November 1900. He worked in the local Schroeter stone business from 1921 and expanded the family marble workshop into his own working space in 1934. His marble work became part of the local Schroeter trade in Overschie.
Rotterdam context
[edit | edit source]Overschie is one of the district areas of Rotterdam. Its role in Rotterdam is mainly based on its older village centre, its northwestern position, and its Schroeter family background.
The district differs from Rotterdam-Noord, which became the main northern base of De Vrienden. It also differs from Rotterdam-West, where western Rotterdam property and commercial activity had a stronger role. Overschie is mainly tied to the Schroeter family through birth, residence, and local craft work.
