Delft is a city and municipality in South Holland, Netherlands, between The Hague and Rotterdam. It received city rights in 1246 and developed around a network of canals connected to the Schie. Delft is also the home of Delft University of Technology and is associated with the pottery known as Delftware.
History
[edit | edit source]Delft developed beside the Delf, an artificial watercourse from which the city took its name. William II, Count of Holland, granted Delft city rights in 1246. Its waterways connected the settlement with other towns in Holland and with the Maas through Delfshaven.
The city expanded beyond its older canal centre during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Technical higher education began in Delft in 1842 with the establishment of the Royal Academy for the training of civil engineers. The institution later developed into Delft University of Technology.
