The Führerhaus is a former official residence and historical museum on Ravi-Ta, near Ipota, in Tanoa, Narevaku. Built between 1947 and 1949 for Jan Paap, it served as the principal residence of the Führer of Tanoa until 2024. His son and successor, Eef Paap, lived there until he was killed by Mark Hugerinus Paap on 24 November 2024. The building was converted into a museum and opened to the public in early 2026.

History

[edit | edit source]

The first residence on the site was a resort that Jan Paap ordered enslaved native inhabitants to build after his arrival on Ravi-Ta in August 1944. The resort stood near Ipota, where Paap's forces had established a base during the first days of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen.[1] In 1947, Jan ordered the building demolished and commissioned a larger residence on the same grounds. He recruited construction specialists from Germany and Argentina, who supervised the work and carried out the more specialized building tasks. Enslaved native Narevakans excavated the foundations and transported materials under armed supervision.

Construction finished in 1949. The new Führerhaus was a large, two-storey residence designed for Ravi-Ta's tropical climate, with high ceilings and broad verandas around the main building. Covered passages led to adjoining government offices. Jan occupied the private quarters and received selected ministers or military commanders for confidential discussions. Most government business took place in Georgetown, where the ministries and central offices of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen were located.

Jan retired in January 1980 and was succeeded by his eleven-year-old son Eef. The family continued living at the Führerhaus, including Eef's brothers Daniel Paap and Richard Nicolaas Paap. Jan remained there while advising Eef during the first years of his rule.[2] He moved out in 1987, after Eef reached adulthood, and settled in a smaller guarded residence elsewhere on Ravi-Ta. Richard Nicolaas accompanied their father, while Daniel established his own residence in Georgetown, where he served as Deputy Führer of Tanoa. Eef took over the main palace and occupied Jan's former private rooms.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Eef ordered additional security work around the residence. The perimeter walls were reinforced, and new accommodation was built for his guards. He also had an underground bunker constructed for use as a private emergency shelter. The bunker contained temporary living quarters and emergency supplies, with a communications room for contacting officials during an attack. The main residence retained its original appearance.

In 2008, Eef had the bunker converted into storage rooms for his private cigar and whisky collection. Climate-control equipment was installed to regulate conditions inside the former shelter, and cabinets were fitted for the collection. Access was restricted to Eef and selected household staff.

The Führerhaus continued to be used for private government meetings. On 12 June 2015, Eef received Richard Rambam following the transfer of cloning technology from Snubable Enterprise to the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. Rambam arrived with his personal physician, Dr. Arnold Isaak Burgelstein. Romanian nuclear administrator Horațiu Wesselescu also attended to explain how equipment obtained through concealed procurement in Romania could support an expansion of Snubable production. Eef questioned the visitors about the proposed expansion and approved further cooperation. Tanoa subsequently provided armed escorts for shipments of industrial equipment to Snubable.[3][4]

Death of Eef Paap

[edit | edit source]

On 24 November 2024, Mark Hugerinus Paap reached Ravi-Ta during his final operation against the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. He had travelled north through Tanoa before approaching Ipota by boat. From there, he made his way to the Führerhaus, where Eef was staying under the protection of his personal guards.

Mark attacked the guards outside the residence before entering the main building. Only one member of the guard detachment was later recorded as a confirmed survivor. Inside the palace, Mark and Eef exchanged gunfire. Mark was wounded in the stomach and shoulder, while Eef was also injured and attempted to move farther into the building. Mark shot Eef in the head, killing him.[5]

Mark left the Führerhaus and made his way towards Ipota Beach, where he collapsed and died from his wounds that evening.[6]

The Führerhaus remained standing after Eef's death. Following the collapse of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen on 30 November 2024, resistance personnel secured the abandoned compound and began examining the building. Most of its furniture and Eef's personal property remained inside. Investigators searched the residence and recovered government documents, including fragmented records concerning the final years of Jan Paap's life.

Members of the Fish Collective later cited some of these records when alleging that Eef had killed Jan in 2005 to secure control of the regime. The surviving documents did not conclusively establish the allegation.[2]

Museum

[edit | edit source]

Narevakan authorities spent 2025 documenting the Führerhaus and preparing it for public use. The national government placed the building under its museum administration. Conservation specialists based in La Roche supervised the preservation work, while important government documents recovered from the residence were transferred to national archives.

The museum opened in early 2026, initially offering guided tours of selected rooms. Staff recruited on Tanoa conducted the tours, which covered the former living quarters and the government offices used during the Paap family's occupation of the property. Original furnishings were retained where possible, and the exhibits explained how Jan and Eef used the residence during their rule.

The room where Eef was killed was preserved in the condition recorded by investigators in 2025. Its surviving furniture remained in place, together with visible damage from the gunfight. Visitors could view the interior from behind a protective barrier, accompanied by an explanation of the events of 24 November 2024.

The underground bunker was also opened as part of the museum. Most of Eef's cigar and whisky collection remained in its original storage rooms, where the cabinets and climate-control equipment were retained. The collection was displayed behind protective barriers and could be viewed during supervised tours.
