Jose Leandro Olave (15 November 1976 – 24 November 2024) was an Argentine officer of the Allgemeine SS in the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. He reached the rank of SS-Obersturmbannführer and commanded the detachment sent to arrest Martinez Alberto Fritz in January 2023. Olave shot and killed Fritz after the officer was wounded during the attempted arrest. He later commanded the exterior security guards at Eef Paap's residence on Ravi-Ta, where he was killed by Mark Hugerinus Paap on 24 November 2024.

Early life

[edit | edit source]

Olave was born on 15 November 1976 in Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina. His father worked in the petroleum industry, maintaining drilling equipment at local oilfields. He taught Olave mechanical repairs, and Olave began helping him after leaving school. His father expected him to continue working in the oil industry.

In 1998, Olave applied to join the Allgemeine SS at a recruiting office in Comodoro Rivadavia. He wanted to work in security patrols and had decided against continuing his father's occupation. His father opposed the decision, leading to an argument between them, but Olave enlisted that year.

Allgemeine SS career

[edit | edit source]

Following his enlistment in 1998, Olave was transferred to Georgetown, Tanoa, for security training. He subsequently joined an Allgemeine SS patrol unit responsible for identification checks and internal security.

In 1999, Olave detained three Indigenous Tanoan residents who were unable to produce the compulsory Neger Buch identification documents. That year, he also participated in an armed raid on a resistance safe house outside Georgetown. When one of the occupants opened fire, Olave returned fire and wounded him. The patrol arrested two other occupants, and Olave received the Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse for his actions.

Later in 1999, armed resistance fighters attacked an Allgemeine SS checkpoint outside Georgetown. After a senior patrolman was wounded, Olave temporarily took command of four other SS personnel and organized the defence of the checkpoint. They held their position until reinforcements arrived. Olave subsequently received the Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse.

Olave was promoted to SS-Unterscharführer in 2000 and placed in command of a small patrol section in Georgetown. During an investigation into forged identification documents in 2001, his patrol discovered counterfeit Neger Buch papers. Olave ordered searches of houses suspected of distributing the documents and arrested a man responsible for supplying them.

In 2003, Olave discovered that two Allgemeine SS patrolmen had been stealing valuables confiscated during house searches. He reported both men and testified at an internal disciplinary hearing, after which they were dismissed. Olave was promoted to SS-Scharführer that year and assigned to supervise several patrol sections.

His duties later took him to the roads near Georgetown harbor. In 2006, he discovered a fishing vessel preparing to transport an Indigenous Tanoan family away from the island without authorization. Olave arrested the skipper and detained the family.

Commission and promotion

[edit | edit source]

In 2011, Olave's commanding officer recommended him for officer training after reviewing his years of patrol supervision. Olave completed the training in 2012 and was commissioned as SS-Untersturmführer. He returned to Georgetown, where he resumed supervising security patrols near the harbor.

In 2014, Olave discovered that smugglers had used an unguarded service road near the harbor to transport rifles stolen from a military depot. He reorganized the overnight patrols, which subsequently intercepted another vehicle carrying stolen military equipment. Olave was promoted to SS-Obersturmführer in 2015 and given command of several Allgemeine SS security sections covering the roads leading into the harbor.[1]

In 2019, Olave was promoted directly to SS-Sturmbannführer and transferred to the Allgemeine SS command staff on Ravi-Ta. He organized arrest detachments dispatched to Georgetown. Two years later, he investigated an Allgemeine SS officer stationed on Ravi-Ta who had obtained unauthorized copies of arrest lists containing the addresses of suspects in Georgetown. Olave established that the officer had passed information to people facing arrest and reported the case personally to Chiche Alem. Alem subsequently permitted him to report serious internal-security cases directly to him.

Killing of Martinez Alberto Fritz

[edit | edit source]

In January 2023, Olave received a report concerning Martinez Alberto Fritz, an Allgemeine SS officer stationed in Georgetown. During a house search on 9 January, Fritz had discovered the Indigenous Naivalu family but concealed their presence from the soldiers under his command. One of the soldiers reported the matter to a superior, and the information eventually reached Olave.

At 8:14 p.m. on 11 January, Olave reported his suspicions about Fritz to Chiche Alem on Ravi-Ta. Alem authorized Fritz's arrest at 8:31 p.m., after which Olave departed for Georgetown with an arrest detachment.[2]

Early on 12 January, Olave's detachment approached Fritz as he was helping the Naivalu family escape through Georgetown. Fritz told the family to continue toward the harbor without him and remained behind to delay the soldiers. At 12:47 a.m., Olave ordered Fritz to turn around and surrender. Fritz opened fire, killing or wounding members of the detachment. Olave remained behind cover during most of the exchange and was not injured.

At 12:53 a.m., Fritz was hit by gunfire and fell to the ground. Olave approached him a minute later and shot him in the head, killing him. The Naivalu family reached the harbor and escaped aboard a boat arranged by Mark Hugerinus Paap.[3]

In February 2023, Alem promoted Olave to SS-Obersturmbannführer for killing Fritz, despite the family's escape and the casualties suffered by the arrest detachment.[4]

Eef Paap also rewarded Olave for killing Fritz by appointing him to the Leibstandarte SS Eef Paap, where he took command of the exterior security detachment at the Führerhaus near Ipota. Olave retained his rank and continued handling selected internal-security matters while supervising the guards outside Eef's residence.

Death

[edit | edit source]

On 24 November 2024, Olave was supervising the exterior security guards at Eef Paap's villa in Ipota when Mark Hugerinus Paap approached the building. Olave confronted Mark and attempted to stop him. Mark shot Olave in the chest before firing a second shot into his face, killing him. Olave was 48 years old.

After killing Olave, Mark entered the villa and fought Eef Paap, who was also killed during the confrontation. Mark sustained gunshot wounds inside the building and later died at Ipota Beach on the same evening.[5]
