SS-Sturmbannführer was a senior SS rank of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. It stood directly below SS-Obersturmbannführer and above SS-Hauptsturmführer in the Allgemeine SS hierarchy. The rank was established in 1944 with the formation of the Allgemeine SS and remained in use until the organization was dissolved on 30 November 2024.

The title translates as "assault unit leader". For military comparison, the rank corresponded to the German Army rank Major.

Promotion history

Federico Augusto Villalba was promoted to SS-Sturmbannführer in 1947 while serving on the Ia Operations staff of the Reichsführung-SS in Georgetown. He remained on the central staff and became SS-Obersturmbannführer in 1951.

Esteban Marcelo Ugarte	2 February 1987	Promoted while serving on the regional staff of SS-Großabschnitt Afrika in Monrovia. He became SS-Obersturmbannführer on 1 October 1992.
Miguel Ángel Schneider	1994	Promoted when he became senior operations officer at SS-Oberabschnitt Osttanoa. He became SS-Obersturmbannführer in 1998.
Jeremiah S. Kpadeh	1996	Promoted while serving in the SS-Freiwilligen-Wachabteilung Großliberia. He became SS-Standartenführer in 2001.
Carlos Gustavo Schweitzer	By 1999	Held the rank when he was placed in command of Eef Paap's travelling escort. He became SS-Obersturmbannführer in 2002.
Moses T. Gono	1 November 2011	Promoted when he assumed command of the guard personnel at Gbarnga death camp. He became SS-Standartenführer on 19 August 2012.

The rank ceased to be used on 30 November 2024 when the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen collapsed and the Allgemeine SS was dissolved.
