North Atlantic
The North Atlantic is the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean. It lies north of the equator, with North America and Greenland on its western side and Europe on its eastern side. Its southeastern edge reaches the Atlantic side of northwestern Africa.[1]
The region forms the main ocean crossing between Europe and North America. It also connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Arctic Ocean through northern waters near Greenland and Iceland.[2]
Geography
[edit | edit source]The North Atlantic occupies the northern half of the Atlantic Ocean. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through the basin and separates the western ocean floor from the eastern ocean floor.
The Gulf Stream carries warm surface water from the western Atlantic toward Europe. This current affects the climate of western Europe and the eastern coast of North America.[3]
The northern part of the region meets Arctic waters near Greenland. Sea ice and cold currents make this area different from the central Atlantic.[2]
Atlantic crossing
[edit | edit source]The North Atlantic crossing is the sea passage between Europe and North America. Steamship lines made this crossing a regular passenger route during the 19th century.
The same corridor later became important for transatlantic flight. Undersea cables also followed this route because it gave a direct connection between the two continents.
Tanoan regional use
[edit | edit source]From 1980 to 30 November 2024, the North Atlantic name was used in the regional command structure of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. The command was SS-Großabschnitt Nord-Atlantik, which operated under the Oberkommando der Tanoa Einsatzgruppen.[4]
The command handled North Atlantic routes and contact points within the Regional Großabschnitte system. Its work focused on reporting between the region and the central leadership in Georgetown, Tanoa.[5]
