The Fish Trap was a trapping device developed in 2021 by Alberto Hartel for the SS Fischjägergruppen, a formation of the Allgemeine SS under the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. It was designed to capture Mark Hugerinus Paap during searches in the Southern Jungles of Tanoa. The traps killed Indigenous Tanoans attempting to escape through the forest. Hartel authorized their continued use after learning of the deaths, although Mark was never caught in one.
Development and use
[edit | edit source]Hartel joined the SS Fischjägergruppen in 2021 after his promotion to SS-Standartenführer. The unit had been pursuing Mark since its establishment in 2019. After reviewing reports of fugitives escaping SS patrols in the Southern Jungles, Hartel proposed a trapping device adapted from an animal trap. He based its design on a bear trap, modifying it to catch a human foot. The Fischjägergruppen command authorized a trial of the device, which became known as the Fish Trap.[1]
The SS deployed the traps in the jungles, where Indigenous Tanoans attempting to flee were caught and killed by them. Hartel received reports of these deaths but refused to withdraw the devices. He approved their continued use despite knowing they were killing civilians. Mark, the intended target, was never caught in a Fish Trap.[1]
