Martin Paap II (born 1 November 1959), also referred to as Martin Paap, is a Dutch figure associated with the Paap family and the second member of De Vrienden. He became leader of the Paap family in 2007 and continues to hold that position.
Early life
Martin Paap was born on 1 November 1959 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, as the son of Martin Paap I. He grew up in Rotterdam and became acquainted with Angelo Noord in 1974 at approximately 14 years of age.
This early association formed the initial core of what would later become known as De Vrienden.
Formation of De Vrienden
In 1974, Martin Paap and Angelo Noord established a close personal association in the Netherlands.
In early 1975, Imro van Hetten joined the group, followed later that year by Lourens Schroeter. In 1976, Eef Hoos joined, completing the five-member group known as De Vrienden.
Within early group dynamics, Paap was commonly associated with momentum, initiative, and direct confrontation. As the second member, he later became symbolically aligned with the number two in the group’s numerical structure.
Cultural activity
During the late 1970s, Paap participated in musical collaboration with the other members of De Vrienden. By the mid-1980s, releases appeared under the name De Lijers.
In 1989, following the imprisonment of Eef Hoos, Paap and the remaining members released the song Veroordeeld, which circulated within associated family networks.
Leadership of the Paap family
In 2007, Martin Paap became leader of the Paap family following internal developments in Rotterdam. His father had previously held the position.
Earlier that year, Paap was involved in a widely discussed street confrontation in Rotterdam in which he faced six Moroccan men during a public altercation.
In November 2007, he was formally elected as the new leader of the Paap family. His prior experience, family lineage, and the perception of decisiveness during the confrontation contributed to the view that he was the most suitable successor to his father.
Under his leadership, the Paap family’s symbolic and organizational structure became more formally defined. Numerical identity (number two) and references to 2007 gained increased prominence in family symbolism.
Family
Paap has a son, Martin Paap III, who is widely regarded as the designated successor to the leadership of the Paap family. As the third in the lineage, he represents continuity of the Paap family structure across generations.
Takistan conflict (2017–2019)
Between 2017 and 2019, conflict emerged following investigations into the Rotterdam-Zuid (faction) and links to Takistan and Khalid bin Thani. Paap participated alongside the other members of De Vrienden.
In 2018, he sustained a severe gunshot wound during armed confrontations. He was treated by Imro van Hetten and recovered after approximately seven months.
Personal characteristics
Paap is described in internal accounts as physically imposing, standing 1.96 meters tall. He is associated with direct speech and frequent use of colloquial expressions.
He has expressed strong attachment to Rotterdam and the Netherlands. Personal preferences attributed to him include beer consumption and interest in tuned vehicles, particularly the Toyota Supra (1998).
