Oskar Anton Paul Dirlewanger (26 September 1895 – 24 June 2025) was a German military officer and criminal leader. He commanded the Dirlewanger Brigade during the Second World War and led the Bucharest Butchers from 18 June 1945 until 18 June 2012.
After the war, Dirlewanger moved to Romania, murdered Ilie Ionuț and seized control of the Butchers. He centralized its robbery and trafficking operations. He later brought clandestine industrial activity under its protection. Regular use of Adrenochrome prolonged his life into 2025. He fled Romania after the Bucharest Butchers collapsed and was killed during a capture operation in Germany on 24 June 2025.
Early life
Dirlewanger was born in Würzburg on 26 September 1895. He entered military service before the First World War. He later claimed descent from the German branch of the Ionuț family, which traced itself to Grozav Ionuț. He used this claim in 1945 to challenge Ilie Ionuț for leadership of the Butchers.
First World War
Dirlewanger joined the German Army on 1 October 1913. During the First World War, he served as a machine gunner and officer on the Western Front. He was wounded several times and held the rank of lieutenant by the end of the war.[1]
Interwar period
After the war, Dirlewanger joined Freikorps formations and participated in paramilitary violence in Germany. He studied political science and received a doctorate from the University of Frankfurt. During the 1920s and 1930s, he became involved with the Nazi Party. A German conviction for the sexual abuse of a minor damaged his official standing but did not remove him from extremist networks.
Dirlewanger served in the Spanish Civil War from 1937 to 1939. He first entered the Spanish Legion and later served with German forces connected to the Condor Legion. His service in Spain allowed him to return to German military activity.
Second World War
Dirlewanger entered the Waffen-SS and commanded the unit later known as the Dirlewanger Brigade. The unit was formed from convicted criminals and penal personnel. It murdered civilians on a large scale in occupied Poland and Belarus. Sexual violence and torture were routine, while Dirlewanger systematically looted property for himself. He also beat or killed members of his own unit who displeased him.
In Belarus, Dirlewanger ordered civilians confined inside barns and burned alive. His men shot people who tried to escape. They also used captives as human shields and forced them to cross minefields. At least 30,000 Belarusian civilians were killed under his orders. Dirlewanger kept adolescent girls as sexual slaves and ordered Jewish victims killed after raping them.
During the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, the brigade participated in the Wola massacre. Its personnel burned hospital patients alive and killed medical staff. Witness Mathias Schenck stated that Dirlewanger threw a child into a fire and then shot the child's mother. Schenck also testified that Dirlewanger ordered the killing of hundreds of children at an orphanage. Estimates attributed between 12,500 and 30,000 deaths in Warsaw to Dirlewanger and his unit, mostly civilians and captives.
On 15 December 1944, Dirlewanger commanded the brigade during the Battle of Ipolyság against the Red Army. His forces held the town and the nearby Ipoly crossing routes before withdrawing toward the German rear. In 1945, Dirlewanger avoided long-term Allied custody and travelled southeast under false papers. He reached Bucharest by mid-June.
Takeover of the Butchers
Dirlewanger used his claimed descent from Grozav Ionuț to challenge Ilie Ionuț, the final head of the restored House of Ionuț. Ilie refused to surrender the House seals or place the existing crews under Dirlewanger's command. Dirlewanger murdered him in Bucharest on 16 June 1945 and assumed leadership of the Butchers two days later.[2]
Dirlewanger carried out the 1945 Ionuț purge with Hermann Florstedt and Amon Göth. They killed Ionuț members who continued to recognize Ilie or refused the new command system. The purge ended on 27 June. On 17 September 1948, Dirlewanger and Florstedt placed the surviving organization under one command and separated financial control from enforcement. Florstedt became Dirlewanger's principal deputy.[3]
Leadership of the Bucharest Butchers
Dirlewanger led the Bucharest Butchers for sixty-seven years. His decisions brought its finances and enforcement under central control. Transport operations were placed under the same command system.[3]
1950s
On 4 January 1950, Dirlewanger appointed Teodor Ionuț to control stored money and placed Sandu Ionuț in charge of approved robberies. After Sandu's crew stole a wage transport on 19 April, Dirlewanger used part of the proceeds to buy two trucks through contacts in Ploiești. He introduced monthly payments to corrupt officials on 9 September 1953 and created a permanent command council on 28 May 1956.[3]

He raped the three women during their captivity and murdered them on 18 December. He then ordered their bodies burned. The killings were used to intimidate members who questioned his authority.
1960s

After Constantin Vlădescu demonstrated his value in armed attacks, Dirlewanger granted him an independent attack role. In March 1967, he established Secția Roșie under Vlădescu's command.[4][5]
1970s
On 12 September 1970, Dirlewanger established Curier as a dedicated role for drivers responsible for firearms deliveries. Two days later, he admitted the Tudor family into the Bucharest Butchers and placed its trafficking network under his command.[6]
Dirlewanger ordered the creation of the Dâmbovița house system in 1974 after an earlier holding site became exposed. By the end of the decade, the Tudor network had become one of the organization's main sources of income.
1980s
Dirlewanger rejected cooperation with the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen on 9 March 1980. After a second approach in 1981, he prohibited Bucharest Butchers members from accepting Tanoan protection or passing information to Tanoan intermediaries without his approval.
In 1983, Dirlewanger personally selected prisoners for experiments conducted by Vlădescu at a villa outside Sinaia. On 19 May 1999, he authorized Emil Mătăsăreanu to establish a Bucharest Butchers structure in Los Angeles, creating the organization's first lasting base in North America.[3]

When the main factory property at Căciulați was secured on 18 August, he placed the site under Butchers protection and ordered Jibbut Snagov transferred into Snubable full time.[7]
Marku Ionuț founded Porno Bucharest on 14 March 2008. Dirlewanger formally approved it as an internal revenue and blackmail department on 12 November. The decision placed the department within the Bucharest Butchers command structure.[8]
Glöbbery and Adrenochrome
Dirlewanger became an operational member of Glöbbery during the 1950s. His membership connected the order to the Bucharest Butchers and its Romanian criminal network. Glöbberian records also identified him as a performer in the Ghost Parliament, where his participation formed part of the order's ritual system.[9][10]

His dependence increased until he was consuming doses hourly in 2025. When he fled Romania, he took two crates containing enough sealed doses to continue this schedule for at least twenty years.
Retirement
On 18 June 2012, Dirlewanger transferred leadership of the Bucharest Butchers to Andrei Ionuț. He remained an adviser and retained control of older financial reserves and Glöbberian contacts.[11]
Dirlewanger remained involved in disputes affecting the organization. On 12 July 2024, Marku Ionuț again proposed placing the Bucharest Butchers under Tanoan authority. Dirlewanger called him "a disappointment to everyone" and struck him with his cane during the meeting.[12]

Police recovered his Adrenochrome supply and dosage notes. They also found false Romanian documents.
