Andrei Ionuț (born 3 September 1992) is a Romanian criminal leader and former head of the Bucharest Butchers. He led the organization from 2012 until its collapse in May 2025, succeeding Oskar Dirlewanger and overseeing its continued operation as a centralized criminal structure active in Romania, wider Europe, and North America. Following the destruction of the organization, he was arrested while attempting to flee Romania and was later sentenced to life imprisonment.

Early life

Andrei Ionuț was born in Bucharest into a family with long-standing involvement in the Bucharest Butchers. Multiple relatives held operational, financial, or enforcement roles within the organization, and his upbringing took place entirely within its criminal environment.

From an early age, he was exposed to the internal hierarchy, disciplinary culture, and methods of the group. No period of separation from criminal activity is recorded during his youth.

Early criminal activity

In 2009, Ionuț was captured on security camera footage stabbing an individual in a Bucharest alley during a failed illicit transaction. Although the footage circulated within law-enforcement circles, no conviction followed at the time.

In 2015, he was involved in a bank robbery in Brașov. Despite substantial evidence connecting him to the operation, charges were not pursued, widely attributed to corruption and political interference linked to Bucharest Butchers influence.

Rise within the Bucharest Butchers

By the late 2000s, Ionuț had become a central operational figure within the organization. His activities included coordination of enforcement units, recruitment, and logistical oversight.

In 2012, following the formal retirement of Oskar Dirlewanger, Ionuț assumed leadership of the Bucharest Butchers. Dirlewanger remained active in an advisory role during the early phase of his rule.

Leadership (2012–2025)

Under Ionuț's leadership, the Bucharest Butchers continued to operate as a centralized criminal hierarchy with defined ranks, internal departments, and enforcement mechanisms. The organization remained active in drug trafficking, extortion, human trafficking, armed violence, financial crime, and illegal pornographic production and distribution.

Financial and political shielding was largely handled by Florin Ionuț, while the internal department known as Porno Bucharest remained under the control of Marku Ionuț. Ionuț maintained authority through direct control of enforcement structures and reliance on trusted family members and senior lieutenants.

In 2013, Ionuț ordered the formal consolidation of the organization's overseas operations. Petru Ionuț and Iakob Ionuț were sent to Hollywood, Los Angeles, to assume direct control over the sub-organization originally established by Emil Mătăsăreanu. Before their departure, Ionuț ordered the elimination of Larry Phillips Jr., who had cooperated with the Bucharest Butchers in California but had never been accepted as a full member. The operation helped secure central control over the Los Angeles branch and increased Iakob Ionuț's standing within the organization.

Online recruitment

During the 2010s, Ionuț operated an online recruitment effort targeting young individuals through encrypted platforms and darknet forums. He used the username Aktion680 as an online identity.

The activity focused on ideological framing, loyalty-building, and recruitment into peripheral roles within the organization. Evidence of this program was later recovered during investigations into his residence.

Relations with the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen

During the 2010s, the Bucharest Butchers became increasingly dependent on support from the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen, which provided protection, resources, and political cover. While some senior figures favored deeper integration with Tanoa, Ionuț opposed the full subordination of the Bucharest Butchers and favored keeping the organization formally independent.

This position created growing tension within the leadership. As the relationship with Tanoa deepened, disagreement over the future direction of the organization became one of the main sources of internal instability.

Internal conflict and downfall

Internal coordination deteriorated during 2024. During this period, Marku Ionuț, Florin Ionuț, and Stefan Shrankenhaus developed plans for an internal takeover of the Bucharest Butchers. The plan involved placing the organization under the authority of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen and merging the structures in order to create a stronger political, economic, and coercive bloc.

At the same time, Petru Ionuț began distancing himself from the leadership and refused to cooperate with the internal realignment. His continued control over overseas operations, especially in Los Angeles, became a major point of dispute. After returning to Romania in February 2024 and rejecting the transfer of authority or assets, he was later killed on 21 August 2024 by Iakob Ionuț after pressure from Marku Ionuț. The killing further weakened internal cohesion.

The dissolution of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen in November 2024 removed the external support on which the Bucharest Butchers had increasingly relied. In May 2025, following coordinated actions by the Fish Collective and the elimination of senior leadership figures, the Bucharest Butchers collapsed.

Arrest

After the collapse of the organization, Ionuț attempted to flee Romania. During the escape attempt, he was pursued by a vehicle and apprehended after a chase.

He was taken into custody without reported resistance.

Trial and imprisonment

Ionuț was convicted on multiple counts including murder, leadership of an organized criminal group, human trafficking, kidnapping, torture, financial crimes, and weapons offences. He received a sentence of life imprisonment.

During court proceedings, he stated that he had no regrets regarding his actions and said that he would repeat them if given the opportunity.

Personal views

Ionuț has consistently rejected expressions of remorse. Statements attributed to him emphasize loyalty to the organization and dismissal of legal or moral judgment imposed by external authorities.
