Iakob Ionuț (12 September 1982 – 2 May 2025) was a Romanian criminal enforcer and member of the Bucharest Butchers. He was the younger brother of Petru Ionuț and served as second-in-command of the organization's operations in Hollywood, Los Angeles. He was mainly active as an armed enforcer, drug trafficker, and internal executioner.

Iakob became known for killing Petru on 21 August 2024 after being persuaded by Marku Ionuț. After the collapse of the Bucharest Butchers in 2025, he attempted to flee through Romania and was killed near Ulmi during a pursuit involving the Fish Collective, Romanian police, and local armed participants.

Early life

[edit | edit source]

Iakob Ionuț was born on 12 September 1982 in Bucharest, Romania. He was the younger of the two sons of Dumitru Ionuț and Lorena Cingolani. His older brother, Petru Ionuț, was born in 1980.

In 1989, Iakob and Petru witnessed Dumitru kill Lorena inside the family home. Dumitru later disposed of her body in the Argeș River. The killing left both brothers under Dumitru's direct authority and placed them fully inside the criminal environment of the Bucharest Butchers.

During the 1990s, Dumitru brought both sons into gambling rooms, safe flats, debt-collection visits, and meeting points used by the organization. Petru developed toward financial control and command, while Iakob developed mainly as an enforcer. By the mid-1990s, Iakob was already being used for intimidation, transport work, and armed support.

Personal life

[edit | edit source]

Iakob lived mainly between Los Angeles and Bucharest during his adult life. In California, he kept several rented apartments, hotel rooms, and safe properties connected to Bucharest Butchers activity. He avoided stable public routines and usually moved with armed drivers or lower-ranking members of the organization.

He was known for expensive vehicles, especially a BMW i8 used during his years in Hollywood and a black 2023 BMW M5 used during his final escape in Romania. He also carried a gold-colored switchblade, later connected to the killing of Petru Ionuț and several other violent incidents.

Iakob's relationship with Petru became more distant during the early 2020s. Petru remained focused on casino income, laundering routes, and command of the California branch, while Iakob developed separate drug contacts, private earnings, and direct communication with Marku Ionuț. By 2024, Iakob was withholding money from Petru and no longer treated him as his main authority.

Criminal history

[edit | edit source]

Early work in Bucharest

[edit | edit source]

Iakob became formally active in the Bucharest Butchers during the late 1990s. His early work involved debt enforcement, illegal gambling protection, weapon movement, and intimidation connected to Bucharest-based criminal operations. He did not show the same administrative ability as Petru and was instead valued for direct violence and loyalty to orders.

By the early 2000s, Iakob had become closely associated with assaults, robberies, and internal punishment work. He carried a gold-colored switchblade during this period, which later became connected to several killings attributed to him.

Iakob rose to the internal position of Blade Captain. Within the organization, this placed him below the senior command figures but gave him authority over armed enforcement personnel.

Killing of Larry Phillips Jr.

[edit | edit source]

In 2013, Andrei Ionuț ordered the consolidation of the Bucharest Butchers' overseas operations in Los Angeles. Petru and Iakob were sent to take control of the structure originally established by Emil Mătăsăreanu.

Before the transfer was fully completed, Iakob killed Larry Phillips Jr., who had cooperated with the California branch but had never been accepted as a formal member of the organization. Iakob entered Phillips' residence in Hollywood, overpowered him with a wire, and strangled him to death.

The killing strengthened Iakob's position and helped secure his role as Petru's second-in-command in California.

California operations

[edit | edit source]

After arriving in Hollywood, Petru controlled administration, money movement, casino operations, and political connections. Iakob acted as his principal enforcer. His responsibilities included armed intimidation, discipline of local members, narcotics movement, weapons handling, and the removal of people considered threats to the California structure.

During the 2010s and early 2020s, Iakob became increasingly independent from Petru. He developed separate drug routes, kept private cash reserves, and maintained direct contact with Bucharest without always informing his brother.

Iakob was also connected to prostitution networks in Los Angeles and used them for contacts, payments, and concealment. Post-collapse records linked him to rape and child sexual abuse involving multiple girls in California. Petru was not aware of these crimes.

By mid-2024, Iakob had reduced his direct involvement in Petru's casino operations and focused more on drug trafficking, side payments, and contact with Bucharest. He withheld revenue from Petru and increasingly treated the Hollywood structure as something that could be transferred to Marku's faction.

Killing of Soufian Schwein

[edit | edit source]

In early 2024, Iakob killed Soufian Schwein, the gun dealer who had supplied Petru and Iakob since 2015. Petru was not told that Iakob had carried out the killing and believed that Schwein had disappeared.

The killing gave Iakob greater access to weapons channels and removed a supplier who remained personally useful to Petru. It also marked a clear shift in Iakob's loyalty away from Petru and toward Marku's internal faction.

July 2024 Los Angeles killing

[edit | edit source]

On 16 July 2024, Iakob shot and killed 31-year-old Marisa Calderón and her seven-month-old son, Mateo Calderón, on a public sidewalk in Los Angeles. Calderón was pushing Mateo in a stroller when Iakob walked past them, stopped several steps away, and turned back toward her. Security cameras from nearby buildings recorded him shooting Calderón first. After she fell beside the stroller, Iakob moved closer, adjusted his position to gain a direct view of Mateo, aimed into the stroller, and fired three rounds at the infant. He briefly laughed after the shooting and left the area on foot without attempting to hide his face or recover any evidence.

Alignment with Marku Ionuț

[edit | edit source]

During 2024, Marku Ionuț sought to gain control over the Bucharest Butchers' overseas operations. Petru Ionuț refused to transfer authority, money, routes, or properties connected to his California command. This made Petru the main internal obstacle to Marku's plans.

Iakob's anger toward Petru increased after Petru killed Dumitru Ionuț during his final visit to Romania in 2024. Iakob later entered Dumitru's house, found the body, and viewed internal security footage showing that Petru had carried out the killing.

Marku used this anger to turn Iakob against Petru. He promised Iakob increased authority, direct access to California revenue, and a stronger position inside the Bucharest Butchers if Petru was removed. Iakob accepted the proposal and became part of Marku's plan to eliminate his brother.

Killing of Petru Ionuț

[edit | edit source]

On 21 August 2024, Iakob entered Petru's closed casino complex in Hollywood at 10:41 p.m. At 10:44 p.m., the two brothers saw each other in the main hall. Petru was armed with a revolver and Iakob was armed with a pistol.

At 10:44 p.m. and 38 seconds, both men opened fire. The exchange continued through the main hall and nearby corridor entrances until Petru ran out of ammunition. At 10:47 p.m., Petru waited around a corner and rushed Iakob when he advanced. Petru knocked the pistol from Iakob's hand and forced him into close combat.

At 10:49 p.m., Iakob drew his gold-colored switchblade and stabbed Petru seven times in the chest and stomach. Petru fell to his knees. At 10:50 p.m., Iakob recovered his pistol and fired a full magazine into Petru at close range, killing him at the scene.

At 10:52 p.m., Iakob left the casino. At 11:37 p.m., he telephoned Marku Ionuț and told him that Petru had been killed.

After Petru's death

[edit | edit source]

After killing Petru, Iakob attempted to take control of parts of the California operation. He lacked Petru's financial discipline and relied mainly on intimidation, drug income, and Marku's support. Several cash handlers, guards, and intermediaries left or disappeared after Petru's death.

Iakob gave Marku information about Petru's accounts, routes, and properties. He also supported efforts to open parts of the California network to Porno Bucharest, including transport channels and protected properties. These plans were not completed before the collapse of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen in November 2024 weakened the external protection that Marku's faction depended on.

During the final months of the Bucharest Butchers, Iakob moved between Romania and foreign safe routes connected to remaining criminal and financial contacts. After senior figures were killed or arrested in May 2025, he attempted to flee Romania.

Death

[edit | edit source]

Iakob Ionuț died during the night of 1-2 May 2025 while attempting to escape through southern and central Romania.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. on 1 May 2025, Iakob left the Bucharest area in a black 2023 BMW M5. He was carrying cash, weapons, forged documents, and storage devices connected to Bucharest Butchers accounts. Fish Collective members and Romanian police units tracked the vehicle south of Bucharest.

At 10:08 p.m., a pursuit began near Călugăreni, close to Comana Natural Park. Iakob was drawn onto a rural side road near the edge of the forest. At approximately 10:22 p.m., Fish Collective members opened fire on the BMW. Iakob was hit three or four times in the chest while still inside the vehicle.

Despite his injuries, Iakob returned fire from the car, killing one Fish Collective member and injuring four others. He then left the BMW and entered the forest on foot.

At approximately 10:37 p.m., Iakob reached a country road near Comana. A 76-year-old woman, Elena Preda, was driving a Dacia Sandero with a dashboard camera mounted inside the vehicle. Iakob stood near the road and acted as if he needed help. When Preda stopped, he shot her twice in the head, removed her from the car, and drove away in the Sandero.

Iakob drove north toward Dâmbovița County. He passed around Bucharest and continued toward Târgoviște, where regional alerts and news reports had already identified him as a fugitive.

At approximately 12:42 a.m. on 2 May, Iakob reached Târgoviște and checked into a small hotel near the old centre under a false name. He was not recognized by the hotel staff. Later that night, a relative of a Bucharest Butchers victim recognized him from regional reports and informed local police.

At approximately 2:03 a.m., police vehicles, Fish Collective members, and armed local participants arrived outside the hotel. Iakob heard the vehicles and jumped from an upper-floor window, breaking his shoulder when he landed. He ran through narrow streets and alleys near the old centre.

At approximately 2:13 a.m., Iakob reached the central area of Târgoviște and was surrounded. He shouted ethnic and sexual slurs and fired at police officers, injuring two of them. He then forced entry into a nearby house occupied by the Marin family. When 48-year-old Victor Marin tried to block him, Iakob stabbed him with the same gold-colored switchblade used to kill Petru. Marin died inside the house.

Iakob escaped through the backyard and reached another street. At approximately 2:22 a.m., he stopped a Renault Clio driven by 23-year-old Ana-Maria Nistor, who was returning home after visiting her terminally ill grandfather at a hospital in Târgoviște. After she stopped the vehicle, Iakob shot her in the face, removed her body from the car and drove away.

Iakob continued southeast from Târgoviște at high speed. At approximately 2:38 a.m., while driving on rural roads near Ulmi and DJ711, he lost control of the Renault Clio. The vehicle rolled several times and came to rest beside a field. The crash worsened his chest wounds and likely broke several ribs.

By approximately 2:47 a.m., Iakob had left the wrecked vehicle and was moving through a field near Ulmi. He could barely walk and continued firing at anyone who approached him. The area was surrounded by police, Fish Collective members, and local armed participants.

Hugo Hugerinus Paap had entered Romania after Fish Collective operations against World Economic Order-linked assets in Switzerland and joined the search for remaining Bucharest Butchers fugitives. At approximately 2:52 a.m., Hugo shot Iakob in the neck with an M24 sniper rifle, the same model of weapon associated with Mark Hugerinus Paap during his operations in Tanoa. Iakob died instantly.

His body was later burned. He received no funeral, matching the treatment given to several senior Bucharest Butchers figures after the collapse of the organization.

Legacy

[edit | edit source]

Iakob Ionuț is remembered as one of the most violent enforcers of the later Bucharest Butchers. His career was defined by his role as Petru Ionuț's second-in-command in California, his separate drug and weapons activity, and his decision to betray and kill his brother in 2024.

The killing of Petru ended the most stable overseas command controlled by the Bucharest Butchers. Iakob's later failure to preserve the California structure weakened Marku Ionuț's plans for North American expansion and accelerated the disorder inside the organization.

His death on 2 May 2025 occurred during the final destruction of the Bucharest Butchers. It removed one of the last active fugitives directly connected to Petru's death and Marku's failed internal takeover.
