Petru Ionuț (7 April 1980 – 21 August 2024) was a Romanian criminal figure and senior member of the Bucharest Butchers. He served as the leader of the organization’s operations in California, where he controlled gambling, financial laundering, and logistical networks centered in Hollywood.

He is notable as the only high-ranking member of the Bucharest Butchers to openly oppose and defect from the organization.

Early life

[edit | edit source]

Petru Ionuț and his brother Iakob Ionuț were the only children of Dumitru Ionuț and his partner Lorena Cingolani, whom he never married. Dumitru Ionuț was a regional controller operating near Bucharest and was involved in extortion and organized criminal activity.

According to multiple internal accounts, his mother attempted to teach Petru about Christianity and the Bible during his childhood. his father strongly opposed her religious influence and frequently assaulted her.

Most surviving members of the Bucharest Butchers have stated that his father ultimately strangled his mother and disposed of her body in the Argeș River. According to these accounts, both Petru and Iakob were present during the incident. Statements from Ruben Istrate and other former members indicate that Petru was deeply affected by the event, whereas Iakob reportedly showed no emotional reaction.

Following their mother’s death, both Petru and Iakob were raised directly within the criminal structure overseen by their father and were groomed from an early age to become active members of the Bucharest Butchers.

Criminal career

Early activities in Romania (1998–2013)

Petru Ionuț became active within the Bucharest Butchers in 1998. During the 2000s, he operated and managed illegal gambling networks in Bucharest, including underground betting houses and private gaming establishments. His ability to generate revenue and maintain operational discipline contributed to his rise within the organization.

By the early 2010s, he had developed a reputation for financial efficiency and leadership capability. These qualities led to his promotion to the rank of Legion Commander.

Hollywood consolidation and expansion (2013–2018)

[edit | edit source]

In 2013, Petru Ionuț and his brother Iakob Ionuț were dispatched to Hollywood, Los Angeles, to formally assume control over overseas operations previously established by intermediaries.

Upon arrival, the two imposed aggressive control over the territory. Their early period in California was marked by violent enforcement, systemic exploitation of local criminal infrastructure, and consolidation of revenue streams. During this period, Petru relied heavily on Iakob as his right-hand enforcer.

Between 2013 and 2018, Petru oversaw the rapid expansion of gambling operations. By 2018, he had constructed a large casino complex in Hollywood featuring penthouses, high-stakes gaming floors, a large parking structure, and an underground garage. The casino became one of the organization’s most profitable overseas assets, reportedly generating approximately $800,000 per month by 2023.

Petru frequently played a rigged roulette game within the casino, which he referred to as “Romanian Roulette.” His repeated public association with the game led to his nickname, “King of Roulette.” He embraced the title and was known to refer to himself by it.

Criminal conduct and internal circle

[edit | edit source]

Throughout the late 2010s, Petru and close associates were involved in additional criminal activity, including car theft, armed intimidation, store robberies, and targeted killings connected to enforcement operations.

His inner circle included:

  • Iakob Ionuț – right-hand enforcer and operational second-in-command
  • Ruben Istrate – trusted lieutenant who later escaped the organization
  • Matteo Bazzani – loyal associate who died in mid-2023 during a firefight while protecting Petru

By late 2023, Petru had discreetly purchased a private residence in Morrison, Tennessee without notifying the Bucharest Butchers’ central leadership.

Petru was known to drive a 2022 Cadillac Escalade in dark sea green.

Gradual ideological shift (2019–2024)

[edit | edit source]

Beginning in the early 2020s, Petru Ionuț’s behavior became less aggressive. He began distancing himself from increasing extreme alliances pursued by senior figures within the Bucharest Butchers.

In 2024, he attended several private gatherings involving members of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen and affiliated elite groups. Exposure to rituals and discussions regarding a proposed strategic merger between the Bucharest Butchers and the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen reportedly influenced his decision to reconsider his position.

Plans to use Los Angeles as a strategic entry point for broader operations further deepened his opposition. His reluctance to support these developments led to tension with Marku Ionuț who was very much in favor of the operation and wanted to be involved with it.

Break with the organization

[edit | edit source]

By mid-2024, Petru Ionuț was in open conflict with Marku Ionuț and other senior members. His refusal to support the proposed merger and operational expansion led to his designation as a traitor within the organization.

He became the only high-ranking member of the Bucharest Butchers to openly oppose and attempt to separate from the group.

Death

[edit | edit source]

On 21 August 2024, Petru Ionuț was found dead inside his casino in Hollywood, Los Angeles. He was 44 years old. He was killed by his brother, Iakob Ionuț, acting with internal approval from the organization. No internal retaliation followed.

Legacy

[edit | edit source]

Petru Ionuț’s defection and death marked a significant rupture within the Bucharest Butchers. The loss of their California leadership weakened overseas operations and contributed to the instability that preceded the organization’s collapse in 2025.
