Imro van Hetten (born 3 May 1956) is a Surinamese junkyard operator and the third member of De Vrienden. He is a member of the Van Hetten family. Van Hetten joined De Vrienden in early 1975, later performed with De Lijers and participated in the Takistan War from 2017 to 2019.
Early life
Van Hetten was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, on 3 May 1956. He later moved to the Netherlands, where he became acquainted with the people who formed De Vrienden.
De Vrienden
When Van Hetten joined the group, Angelo Noord and Martin Paap had already formed its initial core in 1974. Van Hetten joined them in early 1975 at the age of 18, making him the third member. Lourens Schroeter joined later that year. Eef Hoos completed the group in 1976.[1]
Van Hetten was regarded as a stabilizing presence during the group's early years. Unlike Noord's emphasis on documentation and organization or Paap's tendency to initiate activities, Van Hetten generally adapted to decisions after the group had made them.[2]
Musical activity
Van Hetten began making music with the other members of De Vrienden during the late 1970s. All five formed De Lijers in 1978 and experimented with electronic instruments and home-recording equipment.[3]
The group's first official song, Het Vriendenliedje, was released in 1987. After Eef Hoos was imprisoned, Van Hetten and the other three remaining members released Veroordeeld in 1989. The song addressed Hoos's legal situation and circulated among members of the Hoos family.[4]
Takistan War
Van Hetten participated with the other members of De Vrienden in the conflict in Takistan between 2017 and 2019. The fighting followed an investigation by Angelo Noord into Rotterdam-Zuid, during which Noord identified support provided by Khalid bin Thani through Takistan.[5]
During an armed confrontation in 2018, Martin Paap suffered a severe gunshot wound. Van Hetten treated the injury, and Paap recovered after approximately seven months.[5] The conflict ended in late 2019 after the signing of a neutrality agreement.[6]
Personal life and business
Van Hetten operates a junkyard business in Vriendendam. He has a longstanding interest in UFOs and uses the alias Ufo Piloot. He repeatedly uses the phrase Ik ben Ufo Piloot. Van Hetten is also associated with drug culture and practises Muay Thai.
His road vehicles include an orange three-door Jeep Wrangler from 1993 and a Lamborghini Gallardo from 2003. He also uses or owns the X-28 UFO.
Numerical association
Van Hetten is represented by the number three within the numerical structure of De Vrienden because he was the group's third member. The number later became associated with the Van Hetten family.[7]
