The defence industry of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen manufactured weapons and military equipment for the Tanoan armed forces until the collapse of the regime on 30 November 2024. Its development began with the establishment of state-controlled factories during the 1950s, after the forces of Jan Paap had initially relied on imported German weapons. Domestic production eventually extended to armoured vehicles and military spacecraft.

The industry operated through factories in Tanoa and Argentina. The Reichsministerium für Industrie und Produktion supervised industrial production, while individual manufacturers developed equipment for the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS. The Weltraumgruppen maintained a separate aerospace manufacturing programme, which later established factories and shipyards outside Earth. Forced labour was used in weapons manufacturing, including at the Kleiner Einsatzgruppen Waffenfabrik on Tuvanaka.

History

[edit | edit source]

The Argentine Einsatz, established by Jan Paap in 1944, had no domestic weapons industry. Paap collected firearms before his expedition departed Argentina in July of that year, including German weapons dating from the Second World War that had been smuggled into the country. His forces continued using weapons obtained from outside their territory after occupying Tanoa in August 1944.[1]

Early manufacturing remained limited to workshops and repair facilities near Georgetown. These supplied equipment for the occupying forces while the government established permanent industrial facilities. A central industrial ministry was established in 1952, following the expansion of mining and construction under the regime.[2]

Heavy industry had already begun developing through private companies financed by the government. One of these was Strobl S.A., founded in 1949 by Teodoro Strobl with financial support from Paap and wealthy former officers of Nazi Germany. Strobl initially operated in mining and steel manufacturing but subsequently entered military vehicle production.[1]

Firearms and ammunition

[edit | edit source]

The government established Einsatzgruppen Waffenfabrik (EW) in 1954, making it the first dedicated firearms manufacturer of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. It produced weapons for the armed forces until 1967, when the government replaced it with Einsatzgruppen Waffen und Munitionswerk (EWUM). The new company continued manufacturing firearms and began producing ammunition.[3][4]

EWUM remained the principal state firearms manufacturer until the 1980s. Gustavo Kleiner founded its successor, Kleiner Einsatzgruppen Waffenfabrik (KEW), in 1984. The government financed a new factory in the interior of Tuvanaka, away from the island's settlements. A guarded road connected the compound to the island's transport network. EWUM continued manufacturing weapons while the new facility was being built.

When EWUM closed in 1985, its machinery and skilled workers were transferred to Tuvanaka. KEW continued producing the older company's firearms and ammunition. Kleiner subsequently withdrew from factory management, leaving government-appointed directors in charge while he concentrated on his Allgemeine SS duties.[5]

The new factory initially relied on designs inherited from EWUM. Its first original firearm was developed in 1992, when KEW produced a modular assault rifle with interchangeable components. Selected Wehrmacht and Waffen SS units tested the weapon and reported their findings to the manufacturer. KEW revised the rifle before it entered regular service in 1995. The factory continued producing older weapons alongside the new design, whose initial production remained limited.

Larger government orders in 2001 paid for additional machinery and an expanded civilian workforce. The factory also began receiving forced labourers during this expansion. Production increased again after 2014, when the government demanded more firearms and ammunition in response to growing armed resistance.[6]

Armoured vehicles and military equipment

[edit | edit source]

Strobl S.A. began manufacturing tanks after completing its steel production facility on Tanoa in 1958. The company used blueprints that had been smuggled into Argentina during the early history of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. The facility allowed Strobl to manufacture tanks using steel produced under the company's own industrial operations.[1]

Military vehicle manufacturing operated alongside state metalworking and machinery production. Factories supervised by the Reichsministerium für Industrie und Produktion manufactured vehicle components and replacement parts. The ministry also supervised the production of military communications equipment and protective fittings. Repair workshops maintained machinery used by the armed forces.[7]

The ministry classified factories according to their production and military importance. Facilities manufacturing weapons or specialised military equipment received priority over ordinary civilian production when machinery and materials were allocated.[8]

Aerospace industry

[edit | edit source]

The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen began developing rocket technology after the Second World War. Through Operation Sternzug, the government obtained German rocket records and personnel, including Walter Dornberger and Wernher von Braun. The first copied V-2 technical archive reached Tanoan custody in June 1945, while the principal German engineering group arrived in Tanoa in February 1946.[9]

A permanent rocket office, the Raketenstelle Alt-Georgetown, opened in May 1951. Its engineers translated the recovered documents and adapted German designs to equipment available in Tanoa. Lisandro Aráoz Valdivia arranged the procurement of parts through Argentine aerospace institutions. These workshops received the drawings needed for their particular components, while the complete design archive remained under Tanoan control.

The government selected Puerto Deseado in Patagonia for a larger manufacturing facility, and construction of the Astillero Aeroespacial del Atlántico Sur began on 7 March 1956. The site manufactured pressure sections and machinery for spacecraft. Final assembly and launch preparations remained in Tanoa.[10]

On 4 October 1956, the Oberkommando der Tanoa Einsatzgruppen established the Weltraumgruppen and absorbed the rocket office into the new branch. Dornberger became its first commander, with von Braun serving as chief scientific architect.

Engine testing began at Prüfstand Tuvanaka-Nord, where the first successful static test of a V-2-derived engine took place on 18 March 1957. A complete test vehicle was launched from Startplatz Lijnhaven-Ost on 9 August 1958. Manufacturing at Puerto Deseado later expanded to include pressure-rated orbital compartments. Production of flight sections began in May 1962, and these were transported to Tanoa for assembly.

The programme placed its first payload in orbit on 17 May 1963 using the A-10 Georgetown. Further development led to the first crewed Tanoan orbital mission in November 1968 and the establishment of Orbitalstation Paap I in 1974.[11]

Off-world manufacturing

[edit | edit source]

A Weltraumgruppen survey mission recovered an extraterrestrial propulsion assembly on 13 September 1979. The recovered navigation archive contained calculations for routes beyond Earth orbit. Engineers reproduced the navigation system and adapted the assembly's power equipment for use in Tanoan machinery. Under Néstor Ferreyra Alcorta, the branch subsequently directed additional investment towards military satellites and industrial transport.[12]

The Astillero Aeroespacial del Atlántico Sur continued developing equipment for the expanded programme. Its engineers tested a habitation compartment fitted with adapted artificial-gravity equipment in February 1982, but repeated activation damaged the supporting structure. An attack by a Patagonian resistance cell destroyed the Puerto Deseado control laboratory in June 1984, delaying further work while replacement equipment was obtained.

The first permanent off-world industrial installation, Außenwerk Aconcagua, opened on 4 April 1986. It processed extraterrestrial metals near the transport routes, reducing the amount of unprocessed material that had to be brought back to Earth. Engineers continued developing larger spacecraft structures, although difficulties with their supporting rings delayed the construction of complete hulls.

A permanent mining base opened on Eisenwelt in April 1994. The planet supplied ferrum nigrum, a dense metal used for structural frames and armour plating on orbital vessels. Heat-resistant ceramics obtained from the same mining corridor were used in engine compartments.[13]

Orbital shipbuilding

[edit | edit source]

The Weltraumgruppen constructed Himmelswerft Schwarzhafen as its principal orbital shipyard. Construction machinery reached the facility on 6 January 1995, allowing large spacecraft to be assembled from components manufactured in Patagonia and structural metal supplied by off-world mining facilities. The shipyard authorized its first complete city-ship hull on 12 December 1996.

The programme suffered another disruption in August 1997 when a Patagonian resistance cell destroyed two habitation sections awaiting transport from Puerto Deseado. Replacement modules were manufactured, while pressure testing was moved to Schwarzhafen.[13]

Stadtschiff Eef Paap entered service on 1 May 2003 as the first completed city-ship. It measured 2.1 kilometres in length and carried a normal residential population of 72,000. Its onboard workshops could replace pressure sections during deployment. Later vessels were constructed for settlement transport and industrial work, with the Stadtschiff Weltraumkrone entering service in October 2016 as a fleet command vessel.

The Weltraumgruppen also maintained armed spacecraft. These vessels escorted construction convoys and controlled access to occupied transit routes. Schwarzhafen handled major repairs, while larger city-ships carried workshops capable of replacing damaged external sections during deployment.[14]

Industrial administration and labour

[edit | edit source]

The Reichsministerium für Industrie und Produktion administered state manufacturing through its offices in Georgetown. Factories reported their production figures to the ministry, which assigned manufacturing targets based on government requirements. The Oberkommando der Tanoa Einsatzgruppen received information about industrial capacity for military planning.

Military equipment production depended on materials supplied by the Reichsministerium für Bergbau und Rohstoffe. The industrial ministry coordinated with the Reichsministerium für Energie when factories needed electricity or fuel. Technical equipment used by the military was manufactured through the same state-controlled industrial arrangements.[15]

The defence industry employed civilian workers but also used forced labour. At KEW, the government began assigning forced labourers after expanding the factory in 2001. Experienced civilian employees operated the manufacturing machinery, while forced labourers were assigned to material handling and maintenance. These workers remained under factory supervision as production demands increased.[6]

The growing demand for weapons after 2014 placed additional pressure on KEW. Management extended working shifts and postponed maintenance to keep production running. Both civilian employees and forced labourers worked longer hours, while repeated use caused machinery to deteriorate. By November 2024, much of the factory's equipment was heavily worn and its workforce exhausted.

Dissolution and aftermath

[edit | edit source]

The defence industry ceased operating under central Tanoan authority during the collapse of the regime in November 2024. At KEW, the authorities transferred most forced labourers away from the factory during the final month. Civilian employees continued manufacturing weapons, but management ordered the destruction of production records and forced-labour registers as the regime approached its end.

The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen surrendered in Georgetown on 30 November 2024. KEW stopped production that day, and transitional authorities confiscated the weapons held at the factory. Investigators later recovered surviving records and damaged documents. The factory was closed permanently, with its production machinery dismantled in 2025.[16]

The Weltraumgruppen's manufacturing facilities outside Earth followed a different course. When central command collapsed, its planetary governors and fleet commanders retained control of their installations. An Off-world Command Council began operating in January 2025 and subsequently reorganized transport and industrial production between the surviving territories.

By June 2025, Eisenwelt was continuing to supply structural metals to Schwarzhafen. Neutanoa handled general manufacturing, while other installations supplied the materials needed to maintain the remaining fleet. These facilities continued operating after the dissolution of their former parent state, but no longer answered to the Government of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen.[17]
