Gustavo Kleiner (7 February 1944 – 10 June 2024), also known by the alias Papa, was an Argentine senior officer of the Allgemeine SS within the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. He served from 1963 until his death in 2024 and held the rank of Oberstgruppenführer from 2002 onward.

Early life

[edit | edit source]

Kleiner was born in Rada Tilly, Argentina, into a family of mixed German and Argentine background. In 1955, at the age of 15, he joined the Paapjugend des Jan Paap. At 17, he traveled to Tanoa for the first time. In later recollections, he described the island as “mysterious” and “magical,” marking the beginning of his long-term involvement with the regime.

Service in the Allgemeine SS

[edit | edit source]

On 21 October 1963, Kleiner enlisted in the Allgemeine SS. He received officer training in Tanoa, where personnel were prepared for internal security, administrative oversight, and command roles.

As an SS-Untersturmführer, he initially served as a personal bodyguard to Jan Paap. His responsibilities included close protection and coordination of security arrangements during official visits and state appearances.

He later received independent assignments related to internal control and population management. One of his early functions involved ensuring that local residents remained inside their homes during visits by high-ranking officials. These measures were part of broader security protocols implemented by the regime.

Over the following decades, Kleiner advanced through the ranks. In 2002, he was promoted to Oberstgruppenführer and assumed senior command responsibilities within the security structure of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen.

Death

[edit | edit source]

Gustavo Kleiner died on 10 June 2024 in Tanoa at the age of 81, several months before the collapse of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen later that year.
