The Vulkane Einsatzgruppen was a paramilitary formation operating under the Bau-Einsatz within the structure of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. It was founded on 8 August 1991 by Eef Paap. The unit was headquartered at Mont Tanoa and exercised full armed authority over the volcanic complex and its surrounding perimeter.

The Vulkane Einsatzgruppen was responsible for all activities conducted at Mont Tanoa, including the administration and enforcement of the Mont Tanoa concentration camp and the supervision of underground extraction tunnels for gold and emerald deposits.

Formation

[edit | edit source]

The unit was established after the identification of significant mineral reserves within Mont Tanoa. Its purpose was to secure mining operations, enforce forced labor systems, and maintain strict internal control. Although formally part of the Tanoanische Bausatzgruppen, which oversaw construction and engineering divisions, the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen functioned primarily as an armed enforcement and execution force.

Structure and authority

[edit | edit source]

The Vulkane Einsatzgruppen functioned as a centralized security formation responsible for the entire Mont Tanoa complex. Its jurisdiction included surface facilities, underground tunnel systems, detention barracks, labor compounds, and transport routes connected to mining operations.

The unit did not perform mining or construction work itself. All physical labor within the volcanic complex was carried out by prisoners held at the Mont Tanoa concentration camp. These detainees were assigned to excavation, transport, and processing tasks inside the tunnel network and at surface-level facilities.

Members of the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen were stationed at crater entrances, perimeter boundaries, and key access points throughout the site. Guards supervised prisoner work units, monitored compliance with production quotas, and enforced movement controls between surface structures and subterranean chambers. Additional personnel were assigned to ventilation shafts, storage depots, and mineral processing areas to ensure continuous oversight.

Commanding officers coordinated with technical supervisors responsible for planning extraction and construction activities. While technical staff defined operational requirements, the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen maintained exclusive authority over security, discipline, detention procedures, and the implementation of execution orders within the administrative structure of the complex.

Mont Tanoa concentration camp

[edit | edit source]

The Mont Tanoa concentration camp was located within and around the volcanic structure. Concrete barracks, watch posts, storage buildings, and industrial chimneys were positioned along the crater rim and outer perimeter.

Detainees were assigned to underground labor units tasked with extracting gold and emeralds from extensive tunnel systems. The Vulkane Einsatzgruppen enforced production quotas, suppressed resistance, and carried out executions under internal security directives. It was considered fully responsible for conditions and outcomes at the site.

Mining operations

[edit | edit source]

The tunnel system beneath Mont Tanoa extended deep into the volcanic core. Forced laborers excavated mineral veins under continuous supervision. Extracted materials were transported through secured corridors to processing facilities before redistribution through regime-controlled channels.

Security patrols operated both inside the tunnels and along surface routes. Escape attempts were met with lethal force.

Uniforms of the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen

The uniforms of the Vulkane Einsatzgruppen reflected their function as a security formation operating within the Mont Tanoa volcanic complex. High-ranking officials, including generals, wore black uniforms modeled on those of the Allgemeine SS, indicating command authority within the area.

Soldiers, non-commissioned officers, and lower-ranking officers wore brown, green, or reddish flecktarn M40 uniforms made of cotton. The material was selected for durability and suitability in Tanoa’s tropical climate. There was no strict internal regulation regarding headgear, and personnel often wore personal hats or face coverings.

Members were identified by a black armband bearing a black swastika within a white circle.

Standard equipment included handcuffs for detainment, hammers and other construction tools, measurement instruments, and communication devices used to coordinate operations across the volcanic surface and the underground tunnel network.

Crimes against humanity

[edit | edit source]

The Vulkane Einsatzgruppen was responsible for systematic crimes committed within the Mont Tanoa complex. Prisoners were subjected to forced labor under harsh conditions, with limited access to food, medical care, or basic hygiene. Working hours were long, and safety standards were not applied to detainees assigned to mining and tunnel excavation.

Executions were carried out without formal judicial process. Prisoners could be shot or otherwise killed for alleged disobedience, failure to meet labor quotas, or suspected resistance. Collective punishments were also reported, including the execution of groups following escape attempts.

Female detainees were exposed to abuse by members of the unit. Reports document physical violence, coercion, and sexual exploitation within the camp and tunnel facilities. There were no internal mechanisms to protect prisoners from mistreatment.

The unit exercised full control over the camp and mining operations and is considered responsible for the conditions, treatment of detainees, and deaths that occurred at Mont Tanoa.

Disbandment and aftermath

[edit | edit source]

The Vulkane Einsatzgruppen ceased operations following the collapse of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen on 30 November 2024. With the removal of the central command structure, the unit was formally dissolved and its remaining personnel were disarmed or detained under the authority of the new administration.

Control of the Mont Tanoa complex was transferred to transitional authorities. Armed operations within the volcanic zone ended, and detention activities were terminated. The concentration camp facilities were closed, and surviving prisoners were removed from the site.

In the period that followed, large parts of the volcanic installation were dismantled. Surface structures, guard posts, and sections of the tunnel network were either sealed or repurposed. The location was subsequently documented and preserved in part as a historical site for research, investigation, and public record.
