Tuvanaka is an island in the Tanoa province of Narevaku. During the rule of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen, the island housed Kleiner Einsatzgruppen Waffenfabrik, a state-owned arms manufacturer, and the headquarters of the SS Fischjägergruppen. The Tuvanaka Construction Camp supplied forced labor for construction projects in the region.
History
[edit | edit source]The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen operated the Tuvanaka Construction Camp from the 1960s until 2024. Prisoners held at the camp supplied labor for road construction and military building projects in the Tuvanaka region.[1]
In 1984, the government financed a new weapons factory in Tuvanaka's interior for Kleiner Einsatzgruppen Waffenfabrik (KEW), founded by Gustavo Kleiner. The compound stood away from the island's settlements, with a guarded road connecting it to the transport network. When Einsatzgruppen Waffen und Munitionswerk closed in 1985, its machinery and skilled workers were transferred to Tuvanaka. KEW continued manufacturing firearms and ammunition for the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS.[2]
The factory expanded production in 2001, when Tanoan authorities began assigning forced laborers to work there. Civilian employees operated the manufacturing machinery, while forced laborers handled materials and performed maintenance work.[3]
The SS Fischjägergruppen was established on 1 November 2019 by Eef Paap and based at Tuvanaka. The formation pursued Mark Hugerinus Paap and members of the Fish Collective during their resistance against the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen.[4]
On 28 November 2024, resistance fighters overran the defensive positions surrounding the Fischjägergruppen headquarters on Tuvanaka. Alberto Hartel, who was serving with the formation, ordered the surviving SS guards to attempt a breakout. Hartel joined the fighting outside the headquarters and was killed during the attempt.[5]
The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen surrendered on 30 November 2024. KEW ceased operations that day, and transitional authorities confiscated the weapons stored at the factory. Its manufacturing machinery was dismantled in 2025.[6]
