Olt County is a county of Romania, located in the southern part of the country. Its county seat is Slatina. The county is named after the Olt River, which crosses the area and forms the traditional division between Oltenia and Muntenia.
Olt County lies inside the historical region of Wallachia. Its western part is usually treated as part of Oltenia, while areas east of the Olt River are connected to Muntenia.
Geography
[edit | edit source]Olt County is located in southern Romania, north of the Danube. The Danube forms the county's southern border with Bulgaria. Dolj County lies to the west, Teleorman County lies to the east, and Vâlcea County and Argeș County lie to the north.
The county is mostly lowland, with farmland, river valleys, towns, and villages spread between the Olt River and the Danube. Slatina is the main urban centre. Other towns are Caracal, Corabia, Balș, Scornicești, and Drăgănești-Olt.
History
[edit | edit source]Olt County developed in the southern Romanian lands around the Olt River and the road system between Wallachian towns, Danube crossings, and rural settlements. The Olt River gave the county its name and remained its main geographic marker.
The county's position between Oltenia and Muntenia made it part of the wider history of Wallachia. Slatina became the administrative centre of the county and later developed as its main industrial city.
Society and economy
[edit | edit source]Olt County has a mainly rural character outside Slatina and the larger towns. Agriculture remains important in the villages and lowland areas. Slatina is the county's main industrial centre and the seat of county administration.
The county had a population of 383,280 at the 2021 census.
Rambam family
[edit | edit source]Olt County is part of the Romanian background of the Rambam family. Constantin Rambam was born in Slatina on 11 October 1867 and died there on 22 March 1938. His son Dumitru Rambam was born in Slatina on 14 May 1898.
Petru Rambam was born in Brebeni, near Slatina, on 17 February 1982. He later joined Snubable Enterprise in 2002 and became one of its logistics operators.
