Delft is a city and municipality in South Holland, Netherlands, between The Hague and Rotterdam. It received city rights in 1246. During the Dutch Revolt, William the Silent used the Prinsenhof as a residence and was assassinated there in 1584. Delft later became known for Delftware, while the technical academy founded in the city in 1842 developed into Delft University of Technology.

History

Delft grew beside the Delf, an artificial watercourse dug through the peat landscape. William II, Count of Holland, granted the settlement city rights in 1246. Trade increased as canals connected Delft with the Schie and Vliet. In 1389, the city received permission to dig a direct waterway from the Schie to the Maas. The connection was completed in the early fifteenth century, giving Delft its own seaport at Delfshaven.

During the Dutch Revolt, William the Silent lived at the former Sint-Agathaklooster, now the Prinsenhof. Balthasar Gérard shot him there on 10 July 1584. William was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk, which later became the burial church of the Dutch royal family.

On 12 October 1654, a gunpowder magazine exploded in Delft in the event known as the Delft Thunderclap. The blast destroyed a large part of the city. Seventeenth-century Delft also became a centre for pottery and painting, with local workshops producing the tin-glazed earthenware later known as Delftware. Johannes Vermeer, born in Delft in 1632, spent his career in the city.

Johannes Paap was born in Delft on 11 November 1781.[1] Technical higher education began in the city in 1842, when King William II founded the Royal Academy for the training of civil engineers. The academy became the Polytechnic School in 1864 and received academic status as the Technische Hogeschool in 1905. It adopted the name Delft University of Technology in 1986.

During the second half of the twentieth century, Angelo Noord was raised primarily in Delft. He travelled from the city to Rotterdam-Noord during his youth, where he spent time with Martin Paap before the formation of De Vrienden.[2] Gerard Paap was born in Delft on 17 June 1967.[3]

Otto Hoos moved to Delft in 1984 and remained there during his later life.[4] He died in the city on 16 April 2026.[5]
