Andrei Ionuț (born 3 September 1992) is a Romanian criminal leader who served as head of the Bucharest Butchers from 18 June 2012 until the organization's collapse in May 2025. He succeeded Oskar Dirlewanger and maintained the Bucharest Butchers as a centralized criminal organization based in Romania. Its operations also extended into other parts of Europe and North America. After the organization collapsed, Ionuț was arrested while attempting to flee Romania and was later sentenced to life imprisonment.

Early life and rise within the Bucharest Butchers

Andrei Ionuț was born in Bucharest into a family with long-standing involvement in the Bucharest Butchers. Multiple relatives held positions concerning operations, finance or enforcement. His upbringing took place entirely within the organization, where he was exposed to its hierarchy and disciplinary culture from an early age. No period of separation from its criminal activities is recorded during his youth.

In 2009, security cameras recorded Ionuț stabbing an individual in a Bucharest alley during a failed illicit transaction. The footage circulated within law-enforcement circles, but he was not convicted for the attack at the time. By the end of the decade, he had become a central operational figure. He coordinated enforcement units and supervised recruitment. He also managed logistical work within the organization.

On 18 June 2012, Dirlewanger formally retired and transferred leadership of the Bucharest Butchers to Ionuț. Dirlewanger continued to serve as an adviser during the early part of Ionuț's leadership and retained authority over older financial reserves and contacts.

Leadership of the Bucharest Butchers

Under Ionuț, the Bucharest Butchers continued to use a centralized hierarchy with defined ranks and internal departments. Enforcement units carried out armed attacks and upheld the decisions of the leadership. Drug trafficking and extortion provided regular income, while financial crimes concealed and transferred organizational funds. The Bucharest Butchers also conducted human trafficking. Illegal pornographic production and distribution were managed through a dedicated internal department.

Florin Ionuț handled much of the organization's financial and political protection. He used connections within Romanian political structures to limit interference from law-enforcement authorities. Marku Ionuț controlled Porno Bucharest, which managed the production and distribution of illegal pornography. Andrei Ionuț retained authority over the enforcement structure and relied on family members and senior lieutenants to manage individual branches.

In 2013, Ionuț ordered the formal consolidation of the organization's overseas operations. Petru Ionuț and Iakob Ionuț were sent to Hollywood, Los Angeles, to take control of the branch originally established by Emil Mătăsăreanu. Before their departure, Ionuț ordered the killing of Larry Phillips Jr., who had cooperated with the Bucharest Butchers in California but had never been accepted as a full member. Iakob carried out the order. The killing secured central control over the Los Angeles branch and increased Iakob's standing within the organization.

In 2015, Ionuț participated in a bank robbery in Brașov. Substantial evidence connected him to the operation, but charges were not pursued. The failure to prosecute him was attributed to corruption and political interference connected to the Bucharest Butchers.

During the 2010s, Ionuț also operated an online recruitment program under the username Aktion680. He contacted young people through encrypted platforms and darknet forums. The program used ideological material to develop loyalty before recruits were assigned to peripheral positions within the organization. Evidence of the recruitment program was later recovered during an investigation of his residence.

Relations with the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen and downfall

During the 2010s, the Bucharest Butchers became increasingly dependent on the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. The Tanoan organization provided resources and political protection. It also protected Bucharest Butchers operations from external interference. Some senior figures supported placing the Bucharest Butchers more directly within the Tanoan system, but Ionuț opposed full subordination and sought to preserve the organization's formal independence.

The disagreement divided the leadership as the relationship with Tanoa became closer. During 2024, Marku Ionuț developed a plan for an internal takeover with Florin Ionuț and Stefan Shrankenhaus. They intended to place the Bucharest Butchers under Tanoan authority before merging the two structures. The proposed merger was intended to increase their political power and provide additional financial resources. It would also have strengthened the coercive force available to the organization.

At the same time, Petru Ionuț withdrew from the central leadership and refused to support the proposed realignment. His continued control over operations in Los Angeles became a major source of conflict. In March 2024, Petru returned to Romania and rejected demands that he transfer his authority or assets. Marku later pressured Iakob Ionuț to kill him. Iakob carried out the killing on 21 August 2024, further weakening the internal cohesion of the Bucharest Butchers.

The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen ceased to exist on 30 November 2024, removing the political protection and resources on which the Bucharest Butchers had increasingly relied. During 2024 and early 2025, the Fish Collective attacked infrastructure connected to the organization. Operational control declined as senior figures were killed or attempted to flee. The Bucharest Butchers collapsed in May 2025 after the loss of its leadership and remaining support systems.

Arrest and imprisonment

Following the collapse, Ionuț attempted to flee Romania. He was pursued by a vehicle and apprehended after a chase. He was taken into custody without reported resistance.

Ionuț was convicted of multiple counts of aggravated murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He was also convicted for his leadership of an organized criminal group. Further convictions concerned human trafficking, sexual exploitation and forced prostitution. The court also convicted him of kidnapping, unlawful detention and torture. His financial convictions included money laundering, racketeering, extortion and tax evasion. He was additionally convicted of firearms offences, bribery, obstruction of justice and witness intimidation. He received a sentence of life imprisonment.

During court proceedings, Ionuț stated that he had no regrets and would repeat his actions if given the opportunity. Statements attributed to him after his arrest continued to express loyalty to the Bucharest Butchers. He rejected legal and moral judgments imposed by authorities outside the organization.
