The Noord family is the first family of De Vrienden. It began as the Nostrini family in Calabria in 1761. Branches that moved north later adopted the surname Norte. Dutch lines used van Noord, while Noord became the standard surname after 1945.

Origins in Calabria

Land agent Lorenzo Nostrini established the Nostrini family as a formal household line on 14 September 1761. The family seat developed at Casa Nostrini in Cosenza, where Lorenzo kept the household archive under his seal. He served as the founding capofamiglia until his death in 1792.[1]

Domenico Nostrini succeeded Lorenzo on 6 October 1792. He managed the family through written approvals issued from Cosenza. Access to the archive became a source of authority because property decisions required Domenico's seal or a confirmed copy of the relevant record.[2]

Convocation of 1811

Domenico died on 18 November 1810 without leaving a succession settlement accepted by the senior branches. Vittorio Nostrini, who represented the northern branch at Aversa, issued a letter of summons on 3 December. Saverio Nostrini opposed Vittorio's plan to move the central archive away from Calabria.[3]

The Convocazione Settentrionale della Famiglia Nostrini met at the Casa di San Michele from 23 to 30 April 1811. The final vote recognized Vittorio as capofamiglia. The signed act transferred the central archive to the northern branch but preserved Saverio's authority over selected Calabrian property.[4]

The family sealed the Statuto domestico Nostrini on 12 May 1811. It made written succession the basis of senior authority and defined the powers retained by each branch. Other clauses governed marriage approval and custody of the archive.[4]

Northern migration and surnames

Between 1812 and 1819, branches that left Calabria began using Norte in northern records. The surname distinguished the moving branches from relatives who retained Nostrini in the south. From 1820 to 1840, the Norte family expanded through northern Italy and entered municipal administration. Family property continued to be managed through certified records held by branch representatives.[5]

Camilla Norte married Matteo Norte in Aversa in 1852. They moved to Rotterdam with their son Henri in 1858 and converted to Judaism the following year. Their children born in Rotterdam were registered as van Noord, and Henri later adopted the same surname. The household moved to Paris in 1871.[6]

Their youngest son, Julien van Noord, later returned to Rotterdam. Julien's son Angelo van Noord was born there in 1905, establishing the line that later included Angelo Noord.[7]

Relations with other families

During the late nineteenth century, Julien van Noord became friends with Martinus Antonius Johannes Paap and Hendrik Hoos through a French reading group. Visits to the Netherlands brought him into contact with Humphrey van Hetten. Julien also corresponded with Lourens Schroeter, with whom he argued about military discipline. These relationships were personal friendships rather than a formal alliance between their families.[8]

Twentieth century

The Van Noords of Schaan formed a separate industrial branch in Schaan, Liechtenstein, in 1934. Its company, Van Noord-Nostrini Industriewerke AG, developed automobiles through one division and armoured vehicles through another. Conflict within the branch destroyed its operations between 1943 and 1945. Alessandro van Noord was its only recorded survivor.[9]

The wider family line continued through Angelo van Noord, who served in German military formations from 1934 to 1945. His son Angelo Walther van Noord was born in Rotterdam in 1960. During adolescence, he adopted the shorter name Angelo Noord.[10]

De Vrienden

Angelo Noord and Martin Paap formed the initial core of De Vrienden in 1974. Imro van Hetten joined in early 1975. Lourens Schroeter followed later that year, and Eef Hoos completed the five-member group in 1976.[11]

Around 1980, De Vrienden assigned each member and family a fixed number. Angelo Noord received number one, which established the Noord family as the first family. The other positions did not follow the order in which the members had joined.[11]

Members

The documented members of the Nostrini, Norte, van Noord and Noord branches are listed by era at Noord family members.
