This page explains how to identify articles that need a substantial rewrite but should remain available until revised text is ready.

Purpose

Some articles contain useful information but are out of date, difficult to follow, or inconsistent with current wiki standards. These articles can be marked with Template:Rewrite so editors can find them without removing their existing content.

A rewrite marker identifies work that should be completed later. It does not authorize the deletion of facts, continuity details, sources, images, or other useful material from the article.

Marking an article

Place the following template at the top of the article, before its infobox and lead: 

{{subst:Rewrite}}

Substitution records the date on which the article was marked. The stored marker remains a normal template call so its warning can change after more than seven days.

An optional reason can identify the main problem: 

{{subst:Rewrite|reason=The article no longer reflects the current organization of the subject.}}

Use the marker when an article needs broad revision. A small error that can be corrected directly does not require a rewrite marker.

Rewriting an article

Before replacing the existing text, preserve its supported facts and check the article's history, links, categories, and related pages. Remove the marker after the rewritten article has been checked for accuracy, continuity, structure, and working links.
