The Führer of Tanoa was the supreme political and military leader of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. The office was established on 13 May 1944 and remained the highest position in the state until the collapse of the regime on 30 November 2024. Jan Paap was the first holder and served until January 1980, when he was succeeded by his son Eef Paap.[1][2]
Role and authority
The government of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen operated under the Führerprinzip, with the Führer serving as head of state, head of government and supreme political commander. Government institutions and command bodies operated beneath the office, while the Oberkommando der Tanoa Einsatzgruppen functioned as the principal central command authority.[1]
The Führer also stood at the head of the military command structure. Political and military directives were carried through the Oberkommando and subordinate state institutions.[3]
Residence and leadership center
The official residence of the Führer was the Führerhaus on Ravi-Ta. The site was used as a residence and secure leadership center. Georgetown remained the administrative capital of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen.
Succession
The office did not use a constitutional succession process. Jan Paap selected his son Eef as his successor during the late 1970s. When Jan formally retired in January 1980, Eef immediately succeeded him as Führer at the age of 11.[2][4]
Eef's accession was formally marked by a state ceremony in Georgetown on 6 November 1980, eight days before his twelfth birthday. Jan continued advising him after the transfer and remained involved in this capacity until 1987.[4] The succession from Jan to Eef was the only hereditary transfer of the office.
During Eef's rule, the office of Deputy Führer of Tanoa was created. Daniel Paap was the only known holder.
