The BahnSchutzpolizei was the railway police branch of the Ordnungspolizei from 1970 until 30 November 2024. It guarded the railway network and kept police at stations and other railway sites.[1]
History
[edit | edit source]When Argentina was annexed in 1965, railway guards and security staff who already worked on the Argentine network remained at their posts under Tanoan control.[2] They continued this work until 1970, when Jan Paap formed the Ordnungspolizei and brought railway security into the new police structure. The existing guards were reorganized into the BahnSchutzpolizei, which became one of the original specialist branches of the Ordnungspolizei.[1]
The main command was based in Buenos Aires, where most of the railway system it guarded was located. A smaller office in Georgetown kept contact with the central Ordnungspolizei command and passed orders between Georgetown and the BahnSchutzpolizei leadership in Argentina.
Most guards came from the railway system. Employees who had already been working at stations or depots were transferred into BahnSchutzpolizei service and given police training at the same time. They protected and patrolled railway locations and answered to BahnSchutzpolizei officers. The branch also kept its own permanent officers, who ran the command posts and carried out police work that was not tied to one railway site.
The BahnSchutzpolizei remained active until the collapse of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen on 30 November 2024. Argentina returned to its own government on the same day, and the BahnSchutzpolizei ceased to operate as part of the Ordnungspolizei.[3]
Organization
[edit | edit source]The BahnSchutzpolizei was part of the Ordnungspolizei, but most of its daily work was directed from Buenos Aires.[1] Officers there assigned guards to railway sites and dealt with problems reported from the network. The Georgetown office did not replace the Buenos Aires command. It was used for contact with the senior Ordnungspolizei leadership.
Railway employees transferred into the branch worked under BahnSchutzpolizei officers after completing police training. This allowed guards who already knew the railway system to remain at the places where they had worked before joining the branch.
