The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen was a totalitarian dictatorship that governed Tanoa from 9 August 1944 until its dissolution on 30 November 2024. It developed from the Argentine Einsatz, an organization founded by Jan Paap in Rada Tilly, Argentina, on 13 May 1944. After the Argentine Einsatz expedition landed on Ravi-Ta on 9 August, Paap reorganized it as the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen and became the first Führer of Tanoa.[1][2]

Georgetown became the administrative center of the state after its foundation in 1945. Political authority was concentrated in the office of the Führer. Jan Paap governed until his retirement in January 1980, when his son Eef Paap succeeded him at the age of 11. Eef remained Führer until his death on 24 November 2024.[3][4]

The state maintained large military and security institutions and operated a command economy based heavily on resource extraction and forced labor. Its authority later extended outside Tanoa through annexation, occupation and puppet governments. The regime collapsed in November 2024 after the Fish Collective killed or captured members of the senior leadership and disrupted the central command structure.[5]

Name

The name Tanoa Einsatzgruppen referred both to the state and to the military, security and administrative structure through which it was governed. The organization retained the name after the Argentine Einsatz was reorganized on Tanoa in August 1944.

Background

Jan Paap in Argentina

In January 1944, Jan Paap deserted from the German military while serving on the Eastern Front. He travelled across Europe before reaching Argentina and arrived at Rada Tilly on 13 May 1944.

Paap founded the Argentine Einsatz on the day of his arrival. Recruitment began through small groups in Patagonia while he prepared an expedition to Tanoa. Jose Alem joined the organization during this period and later became one of its senior officials.[2]

By July, the Argentine Einsatz had approximately 3,400 members. The expedition departed from Comodoro Rivadavia on 28 July 1944 using chartered and seized vessels.[6]

Formation

The expedition reached Tanoa on 9 August 1944 and first landed on Ravi-Ta. Paap directed the landing and the establishment of the first permanent base. Native inhabitants were forced to construct barracks and command facilities.[6]

After the landing, the Argentine Einsatz was reorganized as the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. Paap became the first Führer of Tanoa, while Jose Alem became the first Reichsführer-SS after the formation of the Allgemeine SS.[1]

The organization then expanded onto the main Tanoan landmass. Nasua was occupied on 15 August, followed by further advances through settlements including Momea, La Rochelle, Savu and Saint-Paul. Forced labor was used during the construction of bases and for resource extraction.[7]

History

After the initial occupation of Tanoa, Jan Paap expanded the state administration and created institutions to control the territory. The NSTAP was founded in 1944 as the ruling political organization. The Reichsschatzamt von Tanoa and Paapjugend followed in 1945. Georgetown was founded on 10 October 1945 and became the main administrative center of the regime.[7]

The state continued to develop during the 1950s. In 1950, Paap established the Oberkommando der Tanoa Einsatzgruppen as the central command authority. Patagonia came under de facto Tanoan control in 1953. Argentina was formally annexed in 1965 and incorporated into the regime's financial and administrative system.[8][9]

Expansion continued during the 1970s through the Tanoa Einsatz Expansionist Campaign. Liberia came under Tanoan control in 1974. Fiji was annexed in 1975 and placed under military rule. Rwanda became a Tanoan puppet state in 1979.[10]

On 31 December 1979, a prison disturbance in Suva developed into the Suva Crisis. Anti-Tanoan rebels fought Tanoan occupation forces and Tanoan-controlled Fijian police until the uprising was suppressed on 2 January 1980. A total of 327 people were killed. Communications between Fiji and Tanoa were reorganized after the crisis.[10]

Jan Paap retired in January 1980. Eef Paap succeeded him immediately as Führer, aged 11. His accession was formally marked by a state ceremony in Georgetown on 6 November 1980. Jan continued advising him until 1987.[4][11]

During Eef's rule, military activity increased in Tanoa and Ravi-Ta. State institutions continued using forced labor for mining and construction. Financial administration became more centralized, while security institutions expanded surveillance and political enforcement.[11]

Opposition to the regime became increasingly organized during the 2010s. The Fish Collective was founded in 2019 and developed networks inside Tanoa. Its members collected records, carried out attacks against officials and worked with resistance members.[12]

During 2024, Fish Collective operations increasingly targeted the senior leadership. Daniel Paap, the Deputy Führer of Tanoa, was killed in August. On 24 November, Mark Hugerinus Paap killed Eef Paap at a villa near Ipota. Other operations disrupted command institutions elsewhere in Tanoa.[5]

No successor was appointed as Führer. The remaining government lost the ability to coordinate its institutions during the following six days. On 30 November 2024, the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen ceased to function as an organized state.[5]

Geography

The original territory of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen was the island group of Tanoa in the South Pacific. The main administrative center was Georgetown. Military bases and industrial sites were established throughout the islands, while underground facilities were constructed in volcanic areas around Mont Tanoa.

Tanoan-controlled territory later extended far beyond the islands. Patagonia was incorporated into the regime's system during the 1950s, followed by Argentina in 1965. By 2020, Tanoan authority extended across most of South America. Suriname remained outside its control, while Brazil operated as a puppet state.

The regime also established direct or indirect authority in parts of Africa. Liberia and Rwanda were governed through Tanoan-aligned administrations. Fiji was directly annexed and became an important Tanoan position in the South Pacific.

The Tanoa Einsatzgruppen was governed according to the Führerprinzip. The Führer served as head of state and head of government and stood above the central political and military command structure.[3]

Eef's accession was formally marked in Georgetown on 6 November 1980. The ceremony did not mark the beginning of his term, which had already started when Jan retired in January.[4]

The Deputy Führer of Tanoa served directly below the Führer during Eef's rule. Daniel Paap was the only known holder of the office.
